PM said PSLE will not be scrapped, but tweaked.

This was mentioned on the first day of PSLE...meaning the change will not happen yet.

Much emphasis has been placed on PSLE bcos of secondary school posting.

In today’s ST forum, a grandfather asked why he doesn’t need tuition but his grandson does. PM Lee said PSLE will not be scrapped but will be tweaked.

Schools have placed so much emphasis that we have to push our kids, but I don’t think parents should take all the blame. Look at the prelim papers set by the schools. Their intention is to create a ‘wake up call’ to students.
*The Math problems are a play of the English language.
*Science concepts tested are not found in textbooks.
        *English textbook doesn’t teach anything.

Just doing past year paper after paper, but they are not marked or else swopped, neither are answers explained or the correct way to answer is not taught to teach/help students. Some teachers even tell parents that the expensive tutors they hire are not coaching kids in school homework !!!
This is totally absurd !!! Even when I was in school then, my Chinese tutor did not coach me in homework. He was hired to coach/guide me.

I think the top brass should investigate such ridiculous incidents happening.

Well, can't really blame the teachers - the marking load is so heavy for them. Unfortunately, we parents need to do our part at home.. for the really busy ones (like me), we are lucky if we find a private teacher who can help out with going through the past yr papers! i send her for a grp class but the teacher is good. she will put aside time to go through the past yr papers that the teachers in school cannot cover.

Foreigners like SG education bcos kids are encouraged to take up Chinese, and that is an asset. That is why Jim Rogers sent his daughters to Nanyang Pri. I cannot deny that the Chinese language is unimportant especially with such vast businesses in China.

But the REAL problem now are those mentioned earlier. Why Singapore has become a ‘tuition nation’ is because of the exams our kids face in school. It may be a Math paper, but the questions are a play of the English language. Hubby and I coached son Science for several years but he couldn’t score. Teachers always tell parents during PTMs that ‘key words’ must be present. Come on, it’s not as easy as that.

If we want to rely less on tuition, subjects taught in school should be delivered with quality and not ‘touch-and-go’. 7 hours spent in school should be quality.

7 hours of quality teaching means 100% teachers must be dedicated, passionate about teaching, love kids and work wonders…

how many percent of such teachers do u think ur dc’s school has?

I agree... the teachers play a very impt role!

my girl had a tuition teacher 4 yrs ago who taught her for 1 whole yr, but i never heard from her. to speak to the teacher, must call the main hotline of the centre and they will tell the taecher to call back. she never did! Needless to say, this teacher doesn't teach her anymore. In fact, I took her out of the centre. sad to say, this was actually a high profile centre.

in contrast... my girl had such a wonderful teacher in P1. every single day, for the first 6 mths of sch, the teacher would send out a report every night on what she did with the class!

so yes, teacher plays a very very important role. 🙂 we parents can consider ourselves lucky if our kids have good teachers!

They do not have to LOVE kids, know what i mean? After all, primary and kindy is different. It's good enough if some do not make sarcastic remarks.

Teachers in any school is like the 'product' in marketing. They are role models, educators to the young and mould the future. Why do you think we have Teachers' Day ?
