1. On the result slip, it will state if you are eligible for 3rd Lang & you need to indicate your acceptance. There will be a briefing on matriculation day if I dun remember wrongly. There will be clear instructions on how to go about it.My DS will be joining NUSH next year, he got CO via DSA. I need to understand on the 3rd language.
1. is it has to be decided when PSLE results are out.
2. is it a paper that students have to pass to get diploma.
3. can they just join the 3rd language just for getting to know a new language.
please advise.
2. No.
3. Yes of course but advisable if kid got interest bcos it will be exams & grades given. -
Hi, can anyone tell me whether NUSH takes kids who have poor Chinese grades, as in just passing? How is Chinese taught and assessed there? Will it pull down the scores that are used for university entrance?

If u have already a CO for DSA, they can't kick u out. If it is by the S!, I doubt u can get in coz from my observation, weak MT can pull the T-score down quite drastically n NUSH entry COP is VERY VERY HIGH! -
Nebbermind:
Thanks. With a CO, still have to get a reasonable T-score or not- 200 or something higher? Have you seen cases of kids with say 3A* and a C and what kind of T-score could such grades get?burp:

Not sure how is your kid's school Chinese papers but I've seen the typical C or B- type eventually get an A for PSLE. This has got to do with how they adjust the bell-curve, I guess.
In SG, every SG kids gotta take the same O and AO (?) MT...cannot siam...no matter which school u go to still does not make any diff in this aspect. -

Got in through dsa. The T-score is still respectable 23X range. So I would expect that if you are really really strong in Maths and Science, mother tongue would not sink you. -
1girl1boy: thanks for your reply. Gives some hope to us. -
Any parent here can share if attending Science Olympiad courses (e.g. from Science Hub) can help prepare your child for the DSA test?

Same as normal schools - CL students do 5 years and sit for H1 CL exam in Year 5, while HCL students do 4 years and sit for HCL O levels at end of Year 4. Only an S grade and D7 respectively is required to clear the exams (unlike other schs eg HCI which want you to get C6 or else HCL students sit for H1 CL exam too). For especially poor students, CL B is available (after you flunk the CL modules a few times).
Syllabus follows the MOE one but standard is not high. Nonetheless CL is a major CAP puller for most students. So if your CL is not good, can forget about getting top acad student awards and the like.
However, while CL will be counted in your overall CAP, the sch allows you to show a CAP excluding CL. If this is higher than your actual CAP, it will be taken into account for admission to local Us instead (not sure about scholarships and overseas unis, though). -

PSLE results determine whether or not one can register for 3rd lang at MOELC. This is free.My DS will be joining NUSH next year, he got CO via DSA. I need to understand on the 3rd language.

NUSH also offers its own 3rd lang programs. Anyone can register for them. However you have to pay (about $100-200 a month).
3rd Lang is an elective. If taken in MOELC, this will not be counted in NUSH CAP. If taken in NUSH, it will be counted in the CAP if it helps you (ie if your 3rd lang modules pull up your overall CAP), otherwise it will be on the transcript but not affect the CAP.
