Yes, even with an encyclopedic brain.. if cannot answer with the appropriate jargon.. cannot score. I like the was it Teacher's Circle or Just Education book.. they have the teacher's explanation on the side when marking the answers. The explanation serves as a guide on answering techniques even when the questions are actually MCQ, it still helps guide children to acquire the skill to answer scientifically.. and not answer in factually-correct English.
That's one thing I realised when revising for psle a couple of yrs back. It's all about answering technique n not how much facts u know.buds:

No Science tuition for my girls. Not distinction results but hey i am ok with it. I cover the (foundation).. ie. concepts and the rest from experiments and learning from mistakes. Mistakes are mostly answering technique not according to scientific jargon. The school dishes out remedial for weaker students (parent/child will receive invitation card for remedial lessons)..
.. and supplementary lessons for all students after curriculum hours once a week. They carry out experiments and cover process skills. It's enough.

PSLE science :
understanding the concepts is only half the battle
important thing is able to write the answers using scientific terms
key words using scientific terms by the exam candidates is to more completely demonstrate their understanding of scientific concepts. not all terms / ideas could be full explained in lay man terms, or it becomes too long winded to explain
lots of time kids in school lesson time did not catch the emphasis from the teachers about using the correct terms to answer a question…and hence lose marks, and parents start to blame teachers not teaching enough
if your kid’s school conduct subject briefing at beginning of pri 5 / 6, don’t miss it, go and take notes and ask questions. it is a partnership process with your kid’s teachers if you really want your kid to learn and score well; and if you also engage tutors, must also reinforce the use the key words and scientific terms…some tutors don’t know that because they have not realised the importance of key words and scientific terms. those tutors who have been examiners or PSLE markers will tell you the same about key words and scientific terms -
Does anyone here can recommend a science book / dictionary that cover and explain the scientific terms for primary school students? Thanks a lot..

I think it depends what results you are expecting and whether you can coach them personally at home. I know of friends who have kids acing science and the kids don’t go for tuition, but these friends coach the kids personally and they are either doctors or scientists! Haha! For me, I am not a science person, neither is my husband, so I plan to start my DD on science tuition next year (P4). She is doing fine in science (band 1) but it only gets tougher after this and I don’t know whether I can cope! Furthermore she is into science so I’d prefer someone who really knows the subject well to guide, rather than having me, who semi-guesses most of the time, guiding her.

I find it risky to go without tuition especially for Science at p5 & p6 because they will be touching on upper block which are theoretically more 'chim' whereas p3 & 4 are the lower block.
For Science, I noticed it's quite similar to Maths in the sense that either that student gets it or does not get it. So we usually see big gap in grades, with one group of students scoring pretty well & another group who struggles a little.
The killer is of course the keywords. Need to write exact keywords on teacher's marking scheme. -

I have been sharing the importance of mastering keywords with a friend too. She insisted that by exposing her child to lots of science facts is sufficient preparation for Science subject. Unfortunately it's not enough.
My dd1 loves reading science encyclopedia & magazines.Been reading all those Science stuff since she was 5 years old. Any science facts she can 随口就来. However, she still needs to attend group tuition for tutor to point out keywords. -

I am still hoping no science tuition for my boy until psle. Although I try to coach, I am no scientist. I rely alot ongoogle and here.

my gal had sci tuition in p3 whole year. she started fine but grades started to drop from 89 to 76 in p3. i still continued the tuition. at that time i totally hands off science. relyg 100% on tuition. but in p4 ca1 she got only 69. i was shocked. i pulled her out from tuition in term 3 (cos term 2 i gave a last chance to try)
guess wat, in sa1 and ca2 she got 80. reason being i started to be involved, got her to do all exam ppers and go thru all myslf. i m no sci person but just use model ans to guide. i wonder if i can still do for p5 -

Really depends on child and school. Try without for P3-4, then decide for P5.
