      Daddy:
      Hi,

I converted 3 2/3 mixed fraction to 11/3. Why 11 = to female and 3 to male ? Still not understand. Thanks.

      The answer is corrected.
      Hi Daddy,

#You are correct in converting the mixed number into improper fraction in order to see the relationship between the female and male workers.

What we understand by the statement “The number of female workers is 11/3 times the number of male workers” is that the ratio of female to male workers is 11: 3. In other words for every 3 male workers there are 11 female workers.

      So, if
No. of female workers = 11 units, then the no. of male workers must be 3 units.

Knowing this, we are given the difference in the no. of female and male workers in the factory. (i.e. 16 more female than male workers)

      11units – 3 units = 8 units = 16
      1 unit = 2

      Total no. of workers
      = 11 units + 3 units
      = 14 units = 14 x 2 = 28

        HI,

        Thanks...

I just asked a stupid question. Sorry for that.

I understood why 11 = female and 3 = male. All the while I came across the value is whole number, but for this question is fraction number. So I get confused.
        e.g. male 2 times than the female. 2 = 2/1.

        male => [ ][ ]
        famela => [ ]

        Thanks alot

Hi, Just came across this question below...Hope to get some help here on how to work out particularly part b.

          [list]

        • Use the following digits to form 4-digit numbers.
          0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Use each digit only once. Do not begin with the digit 0.
          (a) Form the greatest difference of the two 4-digit numbers
          (b) Form the smallest difference of the two 4-digit numbers.

          Ans a) 7654 - 1023 = 6631

          Ans b) 4012 - 3765 = 247

Thank you so much for sharing the answer. Can share how to do the working for (b)? More importantly how to explain it to a p3 kiddo?

Was away for a while, oh no the threads on math and science have no business.

              Time to kay poh again.

              The explanation is :

              1. We have 8 digits to form 2 numbers. This means that there will be 4 digits in each number. That is each number is in the \"thousands\"
              2. Since the digits do not repeat, one number must be smaller and the other bigger at the thousands place.
              3. To make the difference of these 2 numbers \"as small as possible\" we must form the \"biggest possible smaller number\" and \"smallest possible bigger number\"
              4. To form the \"biggest possible smaller number\", give the top 3 digits, i.e. 7, 6, 5 to the smaller number
              5. To form the \"smallest possible bigger number\", give the last 3 digits, i.e. 0, 1, 2 to the bigger number
              6. That leave us with digits 3 and 4. Put digit 3 in the thousand place for the smaller number and digit 4 in the thousand place for the bigger number.
The \"biggest possible smaller number\" will be 3765
The \"smallest possible bigger number\" will be 4012

What happens if there are repeated digits say

              0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6 Have fun

If numbers are repeated like below, then:

                Ans a) 6654 - 1023 = 5631
                Ans b) 4012 - 3665 = 347

If numbers are repeated like below, then:

                  Ans a) 6654 - 1023 = 5631
                  Ans b) 4012 - 3665 = 347
For b) if there are repeat numbers, they must be used for the thousands place. Therefore, the 2 digits 6 are for the thousands place of the 2 numbers (6xxx & 6XXX), leaving digits 0,1,2,3,4,5

Now the hundreds place will have different digit. Fill that last.

Give the top 2 to the smaller number : 5,4
Give the last 2 to the bigger numer : 0,1

This leave digits 2,3. The smaller number will be 62xx and the bigger number will be 63xx

Therefore, the biggest possible smaller number is 6254 and the smallest possible bigger number is 6301

                  The smallest difference is 6301-6254=47

Like to try this one where the digits are not in running order?

                  0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9

Yes that’s right. Actually I was lazy, I just copy the previous answer and change the digits without checking. That’s why the answer is like that …

atutor2001, it was 12 days before Christmas. We'll be branded as kiasu parents if we talk about math and science problems now, wouldn't we?
