Changing the principal and/or vice principal helps. But it is not just the principal and the teachers that can raise the school’s standing. Parents matter too. For some schools, the problem of poor grade arises more from the students’ family background. It is sad but true that there are students who go to school without breakfast or recess, students without a proper place to study, parents leaving the TV on while children are attempting to study, … I know an 11-year old who has to look after 4 younger siblings and take on the responsibilities after school. Each year as I attend the parents-teachers sessions, it is the same faces that I meet and there are also classes where there are no parents attending. I was once asked by a parent what is the purpose of the parent-teacher session.

Even if the school organises enrichment classes, the critical mass of students may not be sufficient to meet the minimum requirement of external vendors. And external vendors are also selective of whom their partners are and there certainly is more mileage working with a brand name school.

What's going to happen to Rulang? Both the principal and vice principal are transferred out. Will the new principal be able to continue its legacy.

Henry Park's principal is transferred to white sands, will white sands become super hot too in next year's p1 registration?

        Just wondering...... :?
The VP which they mentioned to be trsf out fm Rulang makes me puzzle, cos I've neither seen her b4 nor seeing any hierarchy photo change to include her.... But she's listed as the 3rd VP of Rulang in MOE website. So the 2 main VPs are still around, not much impact i guess......

If you rotate the principals too freqently, our education landscape will become very similar to those in the corporate world where CEOs only have a short few years to show quick results. The measures taken were often short-sighted for quick improvement in statistical numbers and some changes may even be detrimental to the long term benefits.

I thought that was what MOE wanted (not sure about currently). Each Principal is CEO... That's why we have the mess we're all in now.

I hear that The principals are usually in one school for 6-7 years . I feel that is a very reasonable amount of time to find their footing , have some vision and gather momentum to make decent changes.

You mean now begins the era of the Star Principal? Where the stars go, parents follow?

I remember in 2004 when i had registered for DD, the then principal Mr Richard Lim was well known and had proved his worth . And when we came to know that he was moving to ACS i think, I was worried. I happened to meet him and express my concern, he charmingly allayed my fears and talked about the great team the school has in place which does the good work.

When Mr. Ng, the current principal, took over, we wondered how he would impact the school. Needless to say he has done a commendable job.

And even as I worry about Mr. Ng leaving now ( DS still is in the school now), I feel optimstic about the future of HPPS.

This is good to know. My DS' school had a good Principal when he was in P1. The Principal after that stayed 2 years and then went off somewhere and now heads a top school. We liked him. The next Principal stayed 3 years and then left too... This 2nd one was really really really bad. Since early this year we have Principal number 3 in the 6 years my son was there. One can see good things happen in this year alone.

                  What is HPPS?

I know Moms who experienced Lee Lip Hong in his years at Maris Stella. Hmmmm... even before the scandal erupted, these Mommies had commented that the school was less well run... and it seems things are better now for their younger sons, with new men at the helm of Maris Stella.

HPPS = Henry Park primary school

2-3 years are short stints really, i heard that in about 6 years the principals change. So I was kinda expecting it to happen in Henry Park since last year.

Just wondering how bad ones make it , I would think they serve as Vice Principals before being given charge of a school ? Maybe some posts from MOE can be directly posted as Principals ?

That is too much to expect. However, it is not too much to expect systemic redundancy that will still mean minimum standard is ensured even if PEOPLE in the system fail.

Learning portal... more school collaboration will help Principals and Teachers such that even if Teachers are poor or Principals are poor, other system mechanisms can kick in and keep minimum quality up. Again no system is completely failsafe but it's already better than when everything had to depend on Principal and Teachers.

It's water under the bridge. No point dwelling on it. I just wanted to share that Principals do rotate after only 2 to 3 years. The RGS Principal has been there what 3 years only? Is she being rotated out or am I mistaken?

I think 10 years is good period. Unfortunately, at our time, people want to see instant results and if one don't move after a few years, he/she will be perceived as condemned. This is expected everywhere, if one don't get a real promotion, then at least rotate to different positions. If one can't buy a more expensive car, then at least change to a newer car.

I am not old but maybe I am getting out of sync with the general pace of the world.
