        Hi mummies,

need advice on how to counsel my boy, who seems to be going through some kind of crisis recently. We have been trying to expose him to group activities like martial art class etc, every time, I tried encouraging him to say hello and play with other kids. He refused, looked away, but I didn’t stop trying. I even tried to be the kaypo person to facilitate the interaction, get the kid to talk to him.
I’m not sure if I have overdone it, recently, he told my mum he wants to go to class but he ‘doesn’t want friends’… Maybe he is aware he is different from other kids, as he has difficulty expressing himself, so he wants to avoid making new friends.

However, when he is with the very few kids he is comfortable with (those who initiate and wholeheartly accepted him as friend), I see that he is trying hard to fit himself in… learning to be like them. For example, insisting to sit with his cousins at the smaller table to have dinner together, insisting that I buy him a P3 math workbook because his favorite pal in the after schoolcare centre is in primary 3 and is using that workbook.

On one hand, I’m glad that he is showing sign that he is starting to show awareness about himself and his surroundings as he attempt to fit himself, but then the same self awareness, also cause him to retreat back into his shell… His behavior and response indicate I should hold back in pushing him to learn to make friends… but I’m not sure what to do next to help him…

For me, I will hold back on forcing him to make friends. He will eventually find friends whom he likes. Like the p3 kid and his cousins. These are signs that he can make friends. Just not those that u are trying to force him to. Like any of us here, im sure we don't want to be friends with everyone we meet but only those we think can get along and share interests.

For my boy, I just teach him that it's polite to say hello and goodbye to pp u know. We practiced a few rounds and I'm glad that he now says hello and bye to his friends, even naming each of them. Previously, he would just ignore them. As for friends, I don't tell him he must have a friend. He eventually made friends in school by himself and recently, he received a 'certificate of friendship' from his classmate! I'm so happy for him. I just help him along like when I know it's his friend's birthday, I got her a present and I asked him to give to her.

            Not at 3 yr old.

Think u still don't understand. At 3 yr old, autistic kids are still engaged in parallel play, caught up in their own world. They do not recognize that there are pp that they need to interact with. When they play, they don't play together. They play alongside. They don't say hi and ignore their friends. Like for my boy, when in kindy, he will hide in a corner doing his own thing while the class is going on.

Eventually, those high functioning ones may make friends but it is still a delayed milestone compared to NT kids.

I believe I posted a website for u before and that time u also said it's too overwhelming. If u are really keen, go google until u find one that u can read easily since we don't know what will appeal to you.

Yes, I think u should get your son diagnosed again at 5. Perhaps by then, they will say it's a misdiagnosis.

              Hi helplessmum,

I remembered you stating that your son is diagnosed as PDD NOS as he satisfied only 3 criterials out of the 6. However I feel that you are feeling the most negative among us. How about think of the rest of the people whose kids satisfied all the 6 criterials and are clinically diagnosed as autistic? How do they feel?

Try to read more and do not depend solely on the information here. Books will give you a more in depth explaination as compared to us. I sacrificed my sleep daily in exchange for the extra time to read up as much as possible. I am also reading up while i'm in train/bus going to and fro from work/home.

Knowledge is power, no one will be able to help your son unless you help yourself with the knowledge first 🙂 However base from your past threads, i read that you have been actively racking your brain trying to think of new ways to train your boy, improve your boy. You have indeed done a lot, so don't feel too negative ok? Your boy has a better head start as compared to most of our kids here already 🙂

Tmr is a public holiday, cheer up and enjoy yourself.

                Hello, come across this forum.

Recently just happened to come across this site.
I pray and hope it can help and seek alternative for kids.

I am not sure on it but if it really can help, then it will be good for the kids.

Yes they will but not as young as your boy, ASD kids will be delayed in this aspect.

In any case, u can ask the experts when your boy enters rainbow.
