OK, thanks a lot. Now I got to 'donate' DS2's P4 textbooks to NTUC.dagong99:
Any idea those books in the booklist, e.g. Shaping Maths Coursebook 5A & 5B, Perfect Match Pri 5/6 Science (Cycle, System, Energy, Interaction) which put as optional, do we really need it ? Last year bought all of them, hardly used ....
DS2 said, dun buy dun buy :scratchhead:
These books are for reference only, really hardly use. My DS bought these books where he was in P5 GEP last year, the teachers didn't use it at all.

HCL is actually easier than CL. And GEPpers only need to handle HCL for p4&5, unlike the mainstream pupils who need to take exam for both papers.I stay in the West. So, Rosyth is out.
My husband and I hv discussed and come to a decision that we shd spare DS the agony of doing HCL. DD is in P5 now n taking HCL so, we know the std and how difficult it is. DD's strength is in the Lang so she can pick it up relatively easily even though we don't speak the Lang at home. But DS is strong in Maths but weak in CL. Making him do HCL will surely kill him.ha... -

Eh? How is HCL easier than CL? It's a worry for me since it appears dd has to try HCL if she goes to Rosyth. Am hoping that HCL isn't as bad as I imagine it to be. :xedfingers:

Cos HCL only has 2 components. Compre and close passage, Unlike the CL papers. My dd didn't take CL from P1-3 either and she is doing well in HCL. Surprisingly, when their class did the mock CL papers, most did badly. -
I do not think hcl is easier than normal Chinese. I would only say some kids do better in HCL and some better in normal Chinese. But normal Chinese is more impt than hcl since psle t score is based on normal Chinese.

During the last PTM with my dd's Chinese teacher, I was told that GEP HCL level of difficulty is higher than that of mainstream HCL.
A friend whose ds (also in GEP) goes to Berries for his HCL Enrichment Lessson. She finds the assignments given by Berries are not helping her son much as they are easier compared to what her ds is expected to do in school. She fed back to the Berries teacher, and she told my friend that the HCL standard in Berries is in line with the mainstream or PSLE requirements. As for GEP HCL, they are unable to cater for as it is only for the minorities.
From P1 to P3, my dd was in a school that offered only CL. During P4 Gep, we find the HCL more challenging but manageable. When come to P5, we feel there is a big jump in the difficulty level, especially the comprehension part.
Personally I haven't got a chance to compare mainstream CL & HCL paper, but have heard that certain years, some pupils may find the comprehension for PSLE HCL easier than that of PSLE CL.
As for comparison between mainstream HCL & GEP HCL, maybe parents with kids from both mainstream & GEP, or those who have seen both types of paper could share your observations. Thanks in advance.

Hi all, did your ds/dd choose the HCL? Discussed with my DS and he wanted to try HCL for next year. Donβt know if it is a wise choice, since they will just do HCL exam paper all the way, then when comes to PSLE, CL paper will play an important part.
Will it happen in the end the kid can do well in HCL paper, but not so good in CL paper? I asked the Chinese teacher during the Parent-Teacher Meeting, she told me this wouldnβt happen, but I am still doubt. -

We opt for HCL. That's why we choose SAP school.Hi all, did your ds/dd choose the HCL? Discussed with my DS and he wanted to try HCL for next year. Don't know if it is a wise choice, since they will just do HCL exam paper all the way, then when comes to PSLE, CL paper will play an important part.

Yes, you may do very well for HCL but so-so for CL, this was what happened to my DS1, but not because he is not good at it. He is very good in both CL & HCL in school but he chose the wrong Composition question on PSLE day. Although he still got A* for CL, Distinction for HCL, but we guessed it was his CL compo that caused him to have a lower range of A*, which, in a way, affected his T-Score. But nevertheless, we still insist both take up HCL in primary & secondary school.
