Perhaps changing the way we eat and live, instead of a diet, is more sustainable?

I've read research on pockets of communities (e.g. the Okinawans, the Sardinians) and I think the key to their longevity is eating real food. Many of them eat locally grown produce and very simply. They eat till they are full and no more. Their exercises come very naturally through their daily lives i.e. managing their own gardens/farms, trekking up/down hills, walking everywhere etc.

I don't do diets as I find that it's unsustainable. Chronic dieters can have fluctuating weights throughout their lives; they binge and crash diet and binge again in a never-ending cycle. Look at Oprah and Kristie Alley...

Instead, I focus on eating real, unprocessed food as much as possible. I order organic veg, eggs and milk from our local farms, buy organic brown rice and flour and cook daily. I bake our bread, muffins, pancakes, waffles from scratch (I always add wholegrains) and freeze. Even things like rempah, sambal are made from scratch. If my kid want sausage, I buy only the type the butchery makes in-house.

The only processed food I buy are condiments but I buy the best quality I can afford.

So in my house, we eat real butter (no margarine or fake butter!), drink full fat milk, full fat cheese, eat a mixture of wholegrain/white unbleached flour/rice, eat raw sugar or agave nectar and we don't cut back on oil nor salt (we use only pink Himalayan or Maldon and a little goes a long way for both).

To satisfy my and my kids' sweet tooth, I can whip up a green smoothie or ice cream (made from frozen organic bananas and dates and cacao powder..yums!)...

I find that since consciously cutting out processed food and making what I can from scratch, I am my healthiest ever without having to count calories and fret over what I put in my mouth everytime. Of course, I do allow myself indulgences like ice-cream and potato chips but I don't crave them now my tastebuds have changed. I used to be able to put away 3/4 pint of ice cream easily but now I eat a quarter of it and I'm satisfied. My weight is stable, my energy level is high and my mind is clear.

ask not what 1 (loaf) can do (to) your waistline but how many more loaves that 1 innocent loaf will lead to 😂
