Ignorance is indeed bliss, but it does not make the problem go away. It will only force the problem to go underground, worsened by rumours and hearsay. We cannot stop jealousy and unhappiness by simply obfuscating information.
      Chief,
you banged the nail right on the head.

      Guess what's gonna happen now?

\"Oh, did you hear about what A said about school B and how they managed their admissions?\"

\"Oh did you hear about how school X performed against school Y?\"

It just goes underground. We are trying to tweak the system to fix what is essentially a problem with the parents.

I have been saying this from day 1 across various threads like private tuition, \"every school is a good school\" etc.

It's the parents creating the stress, not the system.

I fail to understand why some parents feel stressed just because the names and scores of a handful of top students out of a cohort of say 50,000 students are made known to the public. :? 🤷 :skeptical:

I don't think parents are really stressed by the announcement of the top scorers.

I think it's misplaced, the source of stress.

Not every child excels at the same thing. We get to cheer for those that do well in sports and other non-sporting events, but we don’t get to cheer for the child who excels in academics? Truly reactive and myopic!!

If anything, MOE should strive to supply more information to parents, information about the support provided to the bulk of the lower ranked Secondary schools (yes, we know MOE knows who they are since Secondary schools used to be banded into 9 bands), to convince parents that our children are in good hands when they go into these schools. Give more resources to these schools so that they can spend more time helping late bloomers excel too. If parents feel that their children will not be penalised by going to these schools, but will instead be allowed to grow and succeed at their own pace, no sane parent will force their child to go into top schools and have their child suffer because he/she cannot keep up.

Work on removing the stigma of the lower ranked Secondary schools, and the problem of PSLE stress will solve itself.
FULLY AGREE ! Actually MOE said different sec schools have different niches but sometimes I don't see the relevance in that particular niche in helping EVERY kid in the school to grow and succeed at their own pace. Even the exposure is different , some schools go Europe, USA etc for training, others go Batam…..

Just finished listening to Mr Brown's show : top scorer, very hilarious indeed.

Wow!! Watch what you post on KSP!

Lol. It's strange that the report seems to be based on what we say on KSP and yet is so different from what we actually think in KSP.

              Wrong application of insights? :slapshead:

It appears that MOE thinks that PSLE stress can be somewhat reduced by masking the top scorers in its exam. That's equivalent to the common HR policy in civil service of not letting employees know who the top performers are at the end of a bonus period. Apparently, that would help reduce jealousy and unhappiness amongst staff => less stress by not knowing.

Ignorance is indeed bliss, but it does not make the problem go away. It will only force the problem to go underground, worsened by rumours and hearsay. We cannot stop jealousy and unhappiness by simply obfuscating information.
I'm actually for naming the top scorer of A levels students or say, President's scholars . As indicated it is a COMMON HR policy of not announcing the top performers even though it does not make problem go away but at least it helps to avoid MORE problems, doesn't it? Without announcing the top performer, would an employee still work hard ? Work hard for his/her own goals, targets, livelihood etc ? Would the companies go downhill because of not naming top performers ? The stage should be bigger, to fulfill one's own dreams whether in top uni or top secondary school, the quest for knowledge.

As I stated in a post last year, Singapore is well on its way to becoming a mediocre country, thanks to all the clamouring to reduce 'stress' and 'competition', in all aspects of life, from schooling to employment.

If there is too much competition from top foreign students, we don't want it. If there is too much competition from foreign workers, we don't want it. Keep them both out. If there are high paying jobs that are too stressful, we don't want them either. And by the way, we don't want any other Singaporeans to have them too, in case they get paid too well and therefore raise the cost of living for the rest of us, so please send those jobs to China or Malaysia instead. GEP? Too stressful, but since I can't get my children in there, I don't want any other Singaporean child to attend either.

I hate to say this, but the politics of envy have taken over our decision making.

I have felt the malaise for a while already and this is yet another sign of how lily-livered a society we have become.

                      :goodpost: :goodpost:

                      100% agreed. well said!

it increases the commercial value of kiasuparents.com, as inevitably ranking info will be available / could be deduced from postings in this website, other issues aside
