There has been a stream of parents asking

where i bought some of my books, especially
the nice Sue Graves Pull & Learn Phonics books.
Recently, a trip to Jurong Point's John Little had
me uncovering a new find from the same author.

It is this Scholastic - Fun With Phonics series.

As always, here are buds' sample pages.
The few below are taken from the short
vowel /a/ word family book, entitled Fat
Cat. The book also contains some sight
      words.

The books are beautifully illustrated by Jan Smith making
every page a delightful and colourful read for young children.

The Fun With Phonics books come with a Spell Wheel on the right.
The books aren't exactly hardcover, but the cover pages are hard
      like thick vanguard material.

The right side of the book has a small panel space imprinted with
the phonetic words with the vowel /a/ sounds in them. It serves
like a word list of all the words that has been covered in the book
as a recap/revision from what has been read by the child. The
rhyming story is designed to develop literacy skills through fun
      repetition.

Other titles i manage to get were, Jen the Hen, Dog in the Fog
      and Bug in a Rug.

There wasn't any more of the /i/ book available in the wagon sadly..
So, if anyone has chanced upon it elsewhere do post up here so i
can get it to complete my series. 😉

Oh yes, the price of the books?
The books are priced @ SGD $4.90 each.

        buds:
Whole word recognition is when children indirectly

pick up words visually like the common sight words.
Yes, it is fun cos it is made in the form of a game
than in say..... flashcards form or wall frieze form,
so actually children are learning through playing..
        Hi buds

I never got the flashcard thingy. I found it so boring, and so did DS1, so I didnt even try it with DD2 👅

I have flashcards, mummy of two.

But i dun use it ala Shichida fast
flash carding. I use them to show
and introduce new themes & take
time to do activities in relation to
          the individual themes.

Flashcards is but a tool. It is how
we use the tool that plays a part
          in nurturing the learning. 😄

Yup, I was just showing the flashcards to DS1 and he was not interested. Neither was I -gave up after a few attempts. Guess we prefer learning in context. Showing flashcard alone doesn't seem to work hee. Like what you mentioned, using flashcard in relation to themes will make it more meaningful. Now, why didin't I think of that :?

                Wuaaah… you found them! Great!

How do you find them? Are your
                kid/kiddies showing interest in
                the contents & reading them?

                  buds:
If you refer to the Montessori Phonics thread, the introduction to the

sounds of the letters and introduction to letter shape is done
                  simultaneously...

                  Hi Buds,

Sorry to reply u late. Jus came back from my cruise holiday... 😄 And thanks for ur very detailed reply... 😎

Yupz... will be lookin forward to ur montessori diy presentation... learning letter sound and finger tracing at one time...

Hahaha.... e part where you say ur dd1 being seen by you of taking out e montessori material doing tracing n say out letter sound is so funny... so young her lil character already showing....

Also thanks for ur pre-writing ideas... will try to let my dd do (got too many things for mummy to prepare)

And also... thanks thanks for ur recommendation on jolly phonics, u make me so busy...need to check out lots of things, but its gd... thanks for ur inspiration... 😉

Lastly, for e mystery bag game, is it more for e introduction of letter name or letter sound?

Yes, you may. If you’re following the order of the lesson on

the Montessori Thread, work with the letters sounds /c/, /f/,
/i/ and /m/ first. As for the mystery bag game, you can even
do it with one letter sound first.

Carry out the sandpaper introduction first followed by the
mystery bag game at the end of the lesson.

After you have introduced let’s say letter sound, /c/… In the
mystery bag, you can place a carrot, a corn, a cat, a comb, a
piece of cotton, a piece of cloth, a toy camera… anything that
begins with letter sound /c/ basically. Each time your child
takes places her hand into the bag, get her to guess the first
thing she picks up in her hand before taking it out. The carrot
and the corn can be a real one or a toy one that you have in
her toys collection. Once she takes out the item, ask her if
she did guess correctly… then reinforce, for example… /c/ as
                        in comb… shall we trace /c/ again… very good… now let’s get
another thing from the mystery bag shall we? After which, at
the end of the whole mystery bag game, you may suggest to
her to do some actual pre-writing or dot to dot activity of the
letter shape… printing activity… or making popcorn activity…
For children who are older, parents can add other stuff in the
mystery bag that may not begin with /c/ and see if the child
can differentiate. If the child doesn’t yet, more reinforcements
are still needed to work on listening to the letter sounds agn.

For younger children, parents should preferably introduce the
letter names first. ie. the ABCs/aaay… bee…ceees… prior to
the introduction of single letter sounds.
