Do you think majority of the parents who do not have the financial resources to send their kids to such extras are getting resentful and giving up, thinking schools cannot help?

Here’s something I don’t get.

I remember reading an article about how 90% of our kids receive tuition by the time they are in upper primary. Unless that data is wrong, most kids seem to have some form of external help by the time they are in P6. Meaning most parents cough up the $$ to give their kids the extra. Then why the hue and cry about how the haves are advantaged over the have-nots?? Almost everyone is a ‘have’ if it’s true that most kids are supported by tuition!

Of course, they have the added advantage. If one has the ability to pay $100-200/hr, then he/she can hire a very good private tutor to coach or can send to an expensive enrichment centre or can go for brain training (several thousands). At the sametime, we should appreciate the top-scorers regardless of their background as efforts counts.

I was not thinking abt appreciating or not appreciating the output of the child. I’m more interested in the adults’ behaviour. Though that will affect the child of course.


I just feel like we are at a cross-road. I’m like holding my breath for something to happen. It’s like now is the time that MOE can achieve something significant. The ramblings of a night owl.

Maybe MOE should arrange it such that the next top PSLE scorer should be a pure bred local kid whose family is so Singaporean they go back all the way to the time when Sang Nila Utama discovered Singapura; and the kid must not have had a single day of tuition because his poor parents live in poverty and are unable to provide him with any form of academic support; and of course he must come from a neighbourhood school.

Not forgetting he may be a GEP but didn't confirm a place in a top IP school through DSA. If it is really like that it would politically correct and no complaints of unfairness. :salute:

But the reality may be hard for the people to accept. If not why cannot announce the top scorers?
