Compare Victoria IP vs DHS

Hi,

I have a silly question to ask over here.
VS and DHS for IP program
Please help to advise which school is better?
For my DS,he has a stronger in English compare to CL.
He is keen to go to DHS but it is further away compare to VS from the place we stay.I afraid we will struggle a lot when he chose DHS.
I do not know what are different program for this two school.
Please help to advise who ever have DS in this two school

Perosonally, I perfer VS to DHS when actually VS is further for my case. VS just started his IP for Sec 1, but because it has a VJC support for its JC programe, but DHS does not have an existing JC supporting their JC programe, thus it will to develop its own JC program which is still not proven.

This is not true. DHS IP students start taking A level since 2008. This year is the 5th batch. The fist full IP is in 2010. The JC Program is well proven. For the 2011 A Level Results:

The class of 2011 has once again done the school proud by achieving strong results at the 2011 GCE A-level Examination.

99% of the cohort achieved at least 2 H2 Passes and GP/KI Pass.
40% of the cohort achieved at least 3 H2 Distinctions.
59% of the cohort achieved at least 4 Distinctions.
93 Dunmanians achieved at least 6 Distinctions.
39 Dunmanians achieved at least 7 Distinctions.
9 Dunmanians achieved at least 8 Distinctions.
74% of Dunmanians who offered H3 subjects attained Distinction or Merit.
34% of Dunmanians who offered H3 subjects attained Distinctions.

DHS has taken only a few years to reach the status of top JC level.

DHS started the IP programme back in 2005, went full fledge in 2006. It is an in-house 6-year programme just like the one offered at the RVHS. In fact, DHS had produced a President's Scholar back in 2009.

I think there is a slight difference ( at least there is higher efficiency in term of administration in the first model) in the model here. Arguably, there is an advantage in the first model. Otherwise, RI would not have chosen to merge with RJC a few years ago.

Not many transfer to VJC..The braindrain has reduced drastically.

I knew two students who were attached to my colleague, one from VJC and another from TJC, both transfered from DHS but that was 2-3 years back. The VJC one said that DHS is \"very cheena\", VJC programme is \"targetted\" (please don't ask me what she meant by \"targetted\"). The TJC didn't say anything....I can't remember...

Raffles Insitution (JC) - 35 scholars
Hwa Chong Institution (JC) - 18 scholars
Victoria Junior College - 4 scholars
Anglo-Chinese Junior College - 1 scholar
Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) - 4 scholars
Jurong Junior College - 1 scholar
Dunman High - 5 scholars
River Valley High - 1 scholar
National Junior College - 1 scholar

Just saw the above from another post. DHS is ranked 3rd, ahead of all except RJC and HCI.

For those who doubt DHS's performance compared to other JCs, the above data shall speak for DHS's strong standings among the JC and IP Schools. Please note that:

1. RJC and HCI have about 1200 students in each cohort. DHS has only about 400.
2. RI, RGS, HCI and NYGH has COP around 260. DHS COP was about 257.
3. RJC, HCI and VJC take in top O Level students. DHS does not take part in O level admission.
4. DHS has a very short history of A level compared with the others except RVHS.

I wish the above infomation address that DHS SH is equally good as other top JCs. In fact, DHS shall be considered as a JC which can open up to other students after their O level exam.

Hi, I am a Year One student this year. Heard from my seniors that DHS A-level results are not really good(can be better) n some of the yr 3s n 4s seniors had been discussing about SH life in DHS. From what I've heard, they said the standard of DHS is quite low compared to other JCs(as in the top few) n seniors r having difficulty coping with their studies in Year 5 compared to the workload in Year 4(which is already vry heavy--complained by senior) N recently, one of my Year 4 senior applied to transfer to VJ. Seniors gathered again n discussed... Some of them said VJ is better than DHS(although some said it's the same) I am a bit worried here as my Year One results are quite low compared to my classmates.(not really vry low but a B in terms of GPA, n a lot of Q2s n Q3s among the 6 subjects, got Q4s but not Q1s) My seniors told me that Year 1 n 2 are a lot easier than Year 3 n 4. Nothing much but just a bit worried of my studies... n one more thing, my friends r all anime fans n they introduced me a lot of anime stuff to me but I've only started watching after EOY. My mum told me that I nid to study as I slack for the whole yr but my friends told me to rest for a while. I've heard tat students whom r addicted to animes(not only tat but just addiction) will fall behind unknowingly. I dont want to fall behind others but I just dunno how to tell them I want to study(I've told them but they keep asking me to rest n they r enjoying their animes now). Not that they r addicted, but they had worked hard throughout the yr n they deserved the time to rest but not me. I m stressed by my friends now~(sry for the lengthy post)

I used to find a power point presentation slides in the websphere by the former principal of DHS Mr Sng Chern Wei. In one of the slide, he showed that the issue of braindrain has improved and DHS is able to retain their talents to other top JCs. I guess that was also one of the reason why we see the graduating cohort was smallest in the first year and it gets bigger in the second year, third year and fourth year…By looking at the graduating conhort size, one will be able to see how many students have transfered or drop off along the way.


In recent year, the graduating cohort size of DHS is approaching 400, I therefore conclude that not many students have transfered to other JCs.

I see. Some people have replied to the first year student's post in the DHS thread. Personally I found some discrepancies in his post, as a heavy workload for DHS Senior High cannot lead to low standard as stated there.
DHS had a long relationship with VJC before the IP era. Many top DHS students went to VJC to continue their A level. The previous DHS Principal, a President Scholar, Mr Sng was one. He worked hard for DHS to be an IP school several years ago. As Weihan said, the braindrain has reduced drastically after DHS showed increasing good A Level results. DHS has everything to support the students to achieve good A level results. There may be students who want a switch of environment or culture. But there are also students who like to join DHS too after O level, but unlike VJC, DHS cannot take part in post O level application. Hence the DHS and VJC cannot be compared in equal term. As for VS, the IP will start next year. All look forward to healthy competition so that more students in the east will benefit.
