DSA is meant to search for Talents. GEP domain should scrap off.

Just scrap everything such as Best Airlines, Best Teachers, Miss Universe, Miss World, Richest person, Most powerful women, Best Entrepreneur, Best Employee, Best Salesman, etc

The committee members sat in the decision making to stop publishing names have small hearts. How can a MP has a small heart? He has travelled round the world, his mind is like frog in the well.

I only read the last few pages of this thread and saw that there's some discussion on GEP and would like to share how I feel as well.

GEP is not the thing causing all the stress at psle. What's making psle so stressful is the high stakes involved. If you get into an IP school, your JC, and a good one too, would more or less be taken care of. If there's any removal to be suggested, I say remove DSA and IP.

If you have seen or been in contact with the Geppers, you will know that these are kids truly different from your average intelligent kids. Their intelligence is innate. They need to be taught at a different, more advanced pace. The reason why GEP is started is to cater to these children's needs for intellectual stimulation at a much higher level. They were bored with the normal lessons, that's why GEP was started. Without GEP, these children's intellectual talents would not have been recognized. So GEP should not be scrapped.

I was alittle disappointed that my kid didn't get into the programme. 'A little' because deep down inside, I knew she wasn't the top one percent, yet I had hoped she could get in to enjoy all the benefits that come with the programme ie. the small class size, more attention, dsa, more 'love' from everybody else etc.

But I know that these gifted kids do deserve what they are getting, simply because they are born that way and have the potential to be the cream of the crop in our society. That would also mean that they could handle things and process information more quickly, at a more advanced level, when they become surgeons and lawyers.

To me, those who call for GEP to be scrapped is really sour-grape mentality. Either that or they really have no idea what GEP is all about. Even if the kids are trained at P4 for psle, they deserve to be because P4 stuff is too simple for them. You want your own kid to be trained for psle at P4? Make sure your kid can handle it first. From what I know, some Geppers are even doing sec one and two maths at P6, because P6 stuff is too simple for them already! So it's no wonder they ace at psle. For what our kids are struggling at, they already mastered it. They do deserve the high scores.

It's true that alot of these kids get more exposure to stuff, and early too, because their parents have the money. Then earn more money and give the same exposure and opportunities to your own kids. If you can't afford to, like me, who's to blame?
Think you miss the point. It's not about envy or sour grapes. Re-read the pages carefully.

GEP is a great program to discover local talents, but now it have changed and evolved to become a loophole for the lesser 'gifted' or newcomers to gain an advantage then something should be done about it. Same goes for policies such as DSA for academic, IP program, and lowing of academic levels for foreign students joining our system. My personal opinion is that my paid taxes should support locals. šŸ¦†

          I agree with you.

This coming years, our education system has been evaded with FT. GEP programme is using Taxpayers money to support the programme.

Similar NUS scholarship, wasting tax payers money to support sex maniac and ungrateful brat who called us 'dogs'.

If a few are exploiting should the system be scrapped ? Should the majority of gifted suffer because we want to keep out the few?

The point is all talk with out numbers is meaning less.
No need for concrete numbers , atleast just rough figures . Like 20-30 percent are thru intensive gep prep, etc would show a rough picture atleast. All here so far state based on their circle of acquaintance .Which is like at the max 25 students students in all over a few years ( ok this is my guess since no one is stating any numbers. ) A very tiny circle if one considers that there are over 400 geppers each year. And how much of that is thru quality interraction with these kids and how much of it is hearsay?

It is a fact that when you take a very small sample, it is not representative of the whole. Statiscs fail when you consider very small numbers. If i flip a coin 10 times, I could get heads 8 times. However if I flip a coin 10000 times , I can bet you i will not get heads more than 6000 times.

Since you many parents feel so strongly, can some one tabulate? No one wants to state a number. Pardon me, that to me says they are confident the numbers dont speak in their favour.

IMO, I think GEP teachers are the one well positioned to give some numbers and opinions. They have been trained and closely interact with a large variety of students over the years.

Of course as parents, laypersons, we can have our poinions, but , pardon me, it is a travesty to assume our opinions are representative of facts.

Again a few bad eggs and the whole system is trashed. Is it 2 out of 100 that have not kept the spirit of the scholarship? that is 98% good to me.

I agree, some process needs to be reviewed, but diss the whole process.
I mean if i were building a house and I find a crack on my window pane , I would not demolish the whole house , would I?
              .

that is the key word - infested
How do we determine if a place is infested, if we see 2 termites over a couple of years ?

I agree with you most of your points. However, the last sentence is still debatable as in law school or medicine faculty , you can't really differentiate who are from GEP according to my friends who are top lawyers, doctors or NUS lecturers in medicine faculty (MOE can give us more info on this) . Ultimately, apart from brains, they told me compassion, character , attitude and values is equally important for these 2 professions and this is where MOE is changing the direction for us not to overemphasize on academic results only. In addition, when many privileges are being accorded to a kid based on exams taken at 9 or 12 years old may or may not give them a sense of entitlement and superiority to the point that it may even be detrimental to these professions you have mentioned. Whatever schemes MOE implements, as long as it is fair and equitable to the majority, everyone will support I guess.

I give free tuition to low income family at a charitable organisation. From time to time, students from Rgs and Hwa Chong come to do CIP. Most of the students from Rgs are Singaporeans while those from hwa Chong, 6 JC students are all from China n here on scholarship since secondary school days.

Just for comparison which schools most of the foreign students go to.

Since you work with these foreign students a lot, can you confirm what I heard about Hwa Chong JC having special affiliation to certain top unis in China, and that is why they are all concentrated in Hwa Chong JC, where all HCI and NYGS foreign students want to go?

RGS/RI probably has a mix of foreign students.

I did not try to dig out more info from them but can see that they r driven to seek success. Some could not converse well in English despite being in JC Hwa Chong but you can feel their determination to succeed.
Sorry, I can't provide the answer to ur question without any statistic to beg up.
