I agree with you most of your points. However, the last sentence is still debatable as in law school or medicine faculty , you can't really differentiate who are from GEP according to my friends who are top lawyers, doctors or NUS lecturers in medicine faculty (MOE can give us more info on this) . Ultimately, apart from brains, they told me compassion, character , attitude and values is equally important for these 2 professions and this is where MOE is changing the direction for us not to overemphasize on academic results only. In addition, when many privileges are being accorded to a kid based on exams taken at 9 or 12 years old may or may not give them a sense of entitlement and superiority to the point that it may even be detrimental to these professions you have mentioned. Whatever schemes MOE implements, as long as it is fair and equitable to the majority, everyone will support I guess.

This is where I feel MOE should do more. It is hard for 10 years olds not to feel self important when they have been choosen for GEP or top schools in sec when the whole society around them think they are \"gifted\" so should be put on a pedestal , often are envied by peers , held as status symbols by family and friends and friends ( how often we have heard, or said, \"My friend ' son/daughter is in GEP and he got this award, etc etc\" , as if that somehow reflects good on us.

So I think , there should be more interactive , hands on exposure for them to keep them grounded, to immerse into the issues surrounding us ( more for Sec school kids I suppose) . No talks please. To let them realise that thay have been blessed that they are where they are today, and it is their responsibility to serve this society , to use their talent to lift up this country.

that is the key word - infested
How do we determine if a place is infested, if we see 2 termites over a couple of years ?

If a person display symptoms of early stage cancer, don't be in a state of denial and treat it while it is still treatable, don't wait until the last stage when nothing much can be done. πŸ¦†

So we do a biopsy to check? aka get some numbers to show reasonable doubt?
Or should we bombard the whole body with intense chemotherapy because there seems to be a tiny lump in the toe and googled to find that might be cancer ?

GEP is not the thing causing all the stress at psle. What's making psle so stressful is the high stakes involved. If you get into an IP school, your JC, and a good one too, would more or less be taken care of. If there's any removal to be suggested, I say remove DSA and IP.

If you have seen or been in contact with the Geppers, you will know that these are kids truly different from your average intelligent kids. Their intelligence is innate. They need to be taught at a different, more advanced pace. The reason why GEP is started is to cater to these children's needs for intellectual stimulation at a much higher level. They were bored with the normal lessons, that's why GEP was started. Without GEP, these children's intellectual talents would not have been recognized. So GEP should not be scrapped.

I was alittle disappointed that my kid didn't get into the programme. 'A little' because deep down inside, I knew she wasn't the top one percent, yet I had hoped she could get in to enjoy all the benefits that come with the programme ie. the small class size, more attention, dsa, more 'love' from everybody else etc.

But I know that these gifted kids do deserve what they are getting, simply because they are born that way and have the potential to be the cream of the crop in our society. That would also mean that they could handle things and process information more quickly, at a more advanced level, when they become surgeons and lawyers.

I agree with you most of your points. May I add. The question here is not to abolish all the schemes. It is that these schemes can continue with some modifications such that they do not give unfair advantages to the top students at the expense of the weaker ones who actually need greater helps.

Why are we worrying so much for those who are doing well? GEP, DSA…

How about those who are battling the Normal-Express Stream? How much efforts are there to boost the grades of the bottom tier so that overall standards are raised? Or does the T-score make it such that as long as you are those with lower grades, you DEFINITELY fall into the Normal stream, go to ITE, etc.? What is the percentage of pupils going to Normal stream compared to past years? Have there been improvement?

...this is where MOE is changing the direction for us not to overemphasize on academic results only...

This is just populist hogwash to placate the disgruntled voters. To change the direction to \"not overemphasize on academic results only\" would require more than the MOE. For starters, it requires the Prime Minister's Office to get on board. What MOE does by itself will come to nought if the the Public Service Commission still picks scholars and recruits officers for the Administrative Service based primarily on academic results. It will not change anything unless different career tracks for scholars and admin service officers are scrapped.

But believe me, if this happens, parents will be wondering how the PSC measures the non-academic attributes. How do you assign a score to measure objectively and vigourously \"compassion, character, attitude and values\"?

I wait for the day when Singapore gives out a President's Scholarship to somebody who only manages to score 3 Bs solely on the basis of \"extraordinary strength in compassion, character, attitude and values\". Then we will really see the crap hit the fan.

But, if burying one's head in the sand helps to relieve stress for some parents...

PSC is still using academic results to choose their scholars.

You know something the \"majority\" doesn't know? Or is this purely your speculation?
