[Choa Chu Kang] Primary Schools
-
DLS is a natural popular vote cause
of its affiliation and also one of the
faith school within Choa Chu Kang.
SV is another natural vote due to
its creative teaching styles, good
rapport with parents & of course
the extra of being a consistently
performing school.
No matter which is the preferred
school of one's choice, ultimately
in a human dependent industry...
if one's child gets a main teacher
who has passion for her job and
cares enough for all her children
equally to ensure all of them
perform to the best of their
individual potential.... then one's
child would definitely have equal
opportunities to perform well.
With personal experience & sharings
from friends, it does not necessarily
always mean that good teachers
only come from good schools.
The motivation of a teaching person
varies from one individual to another.
My kiddies are in neighbourhood sch
too and we've had our fair shares of
good & bad teachers experience. Like
wise for friends in other prestigious schs..
Let's just hope that our children are able
to be motivated to learn happily no matter
which school they are placed in. Parents
are also ultimately the pillar of support for
all our children to ensure they keep up with
the school curriculum and its activities.
There's really no good or bad school especially
when you're talking about our Singapore schs..
We have schools equipped with the facilities &
the abundance of resources as compared to the
schools in say tsumani affected regions and 3rd
world countries where though the schools are
simply a place of congregation for all their students
with sufficient necessities, their children are more than
eager to learn..... and their teachers...... are more than
motivated to give. ie. teach..
I was once offered to tag along with a group of volunteers
to teach in a village in the remote areas of Thailand... But
sadly, i was pregnant then and couldn't accommodate them.
However, should time permit when the offer comes again....
i would happily oblige. The feeling of having children hungry
for knowledge is unexplainable & exudes a driven motivation
to give. ie. (teach)
Now, let's all dispense with the top school and not top school
talk within the community school threads anywhere. Everyone
play nice now, yeah! Come come... we're all family here. BIG

I TOTALLY agree with buds and baby2momma ! There is no perfect school. You will have good and not-so-good teachers and pupils in EVERY SCHOOL - even your so-called \"BEST\" school ! It is good to have realistic expectations least you be very disapointed when the bubble burst.
Agree that DLS is popular due to its affiliation and it being one of the few faith school in CCK. I also contact DLS years ago and I agree about their high-handed way of handling queries about PV. It could be related to the high volume of queries they get or that being a faith school, they have resource support from affilated churches and hence no need and do not have any PV programme. Whatever it is, the effectiveness of the admin staff did not affect my impression of the school which is that it is well run and has dedicated teachers. Being a faith school, it also offers a more holistic and moral building environment.
About PSLE results, it varies from year to year. Last year (2008 PSLE) YTPS was the \"star\" of CCK, producing top scorer of 284. SV's top scorer was 27*. Check the past few years PSLE results'', Unity Primary also had some top scorers.
For the record, my child is in SV and my child have had motivated and not-so-motivated teachers. One year's form teacher has really weak grammar foundation and made spelling errors in the children's journal book. The admin staff, similarly, some great ones and some not so great ones. I interact with them a lot because I did PV at the school.
My child and I love the school but I will definitely *not* say this school is better than XXX school or has better school attitude than XXX school or the TOP school in CCK - simply because I don't think those are fair statements and are too sweeping. -

I totally agree. Even in RI, I heard that some teachers are very lazy there.Haven't been to this thread for a while....

Wrong.
Dont waste time comparing teachers from different neighbourhood schools, as they are assigned by MOE.
Unless the school has the autonomy to interview and select teachers, like at secondary/JC ( Hwa Chung Institution).
However, who is the school Principal is most important, cos he/she set the tone and the school culture, and as a result, how well the school would perform.
But normally MOE will rotate Principal once has served in school for more than 5 to 6 years, or at most 8 years.
For example, SV Principal has been around in SV for more than 5 years, I would not be surprised if Principal change in near future. -
Agree and we normal human beings do not dictate who will be the next principal so it is not fair so say XXX school is better than YYY school or XXX school is the top school. Agree that we may be seeing a new principal soon and in the past few years she has been with the school, she has done a lot for the school and this is the year we saw outstanding results. It is really anyone’s guess who the next principal will be, what kind of changes it will bring.
Hence, I still maintain that it is good to have realistic expectations rather than put our school on a pedestal. -

Thanks to cafelatte for helping me \"explain\" the situation...... :celebrate:Haven't been to this thread for a while....

Whether the child performs or not; depends on many factors as what cafelatte advised.... -
Hi, I am a newbie. Looking for Primary school for my son next year.
My house is not near (<1km) to any school. Nearest is Yew Tee Primary. 2.9km. DLS is 3.2km and SV is 3.9km
Any suggestion or opinion.
Thanks. :?: -

Hi Christine, sorry to say the only way to secure a place is to do PV as all schools within CCK are hot and you can forget about these 3 schools if you're not staying within 1km. DLS don't accept PV, I don't think SV accept PV for those outside 2KM and if I remembered correctly, there was balloting for phrase 2B for those PV within 1km last year...seem like the only option is to do PV at YT. Good luck.Hi, I am a newbie. Looking for Primary school for my son next year.

Hi all,
I am a new user and daddy of 3. My eldest son is in K2 now and I am having headache on where to register him next yr.
1st choice SV - more than 1km less than 2km so meaning balloting require and chances not high.
2nd choice - St Anthony (Bt Batok) 3.9km but can use caretaker address, just opp the school…Still under P2C. Wife is currently praying in Catholic church but she has not baptised herself…arggh, will seek alternative with church, hopefully the church can help and have us in P2B.
3rd choice - CCKPS within 100mtr !! How is this school ?? not much comments in here on this school.
Thanks and cheers

It's always nice hearing from daddies here. :celebrate:Chengcab:
Balloting is normal here at SV, even at the 1km phase. In fact last year, some1st choice SV - more than 1km less than 2km so meaning balloting require and chances not high.
of the PV (Parent Volunteers) lost their supposedly thought guaranteed spaces
due to balloting as the PV was over-subscribed. I suppose it's a matter of luck
here if you do eventually go for it. SV parents, feel free to correct my information
yah.. more credible to come from current parents.
Chengcab:
Sounds like a better chance here. Of course it'll save you and yer missus a lotta2nd choice - St Anthony (Bt Batok) 3.9km but can use caretaker address, just opp the school...Still under P2C. heartache and trouble if you manage to squeeze into Phase 2B. Good luck!

at Bt Batok? I have an ex-student in this school and the parent says child is
very happy there and the teachers have been good. Her DD is in P3 there now.
Sorry not able to provide further details on the school, as have not been able
to catch up with other parents i know there for more in-depth details.
Another way is also to find some answers at the Parents Networking thread.
Mebbe you'd get more information there. Click the blue link to go right there.
