seriously, for 199, better to apply for normal (acad) in a popular school, eg a school with COP of 24x for its express stream but also has normal stream

you will be in a very good school, and will likely to do well in year 1 of the normal acad stream, and stand a chance to be upgraded to express stream, which you will never be able to get in based on tscore of 199

if you try to squeeze into any other secondary school express stream at 199, you are likely to be at the bottom and imagine who else in the cohort ..... to be politically sensitive it is not right for me to mention what kind of students making up those COP 199~200 at express stream

and honestly, not all sec schools are the same
Know someone who scored 196 last yr chose NA to go to a good sec sch (her dream sch) in the east. She did very well and topped her class, only one in her class to get transferred to 2 Exp next yr.

She would not entered the Exp stream based on her psle score...

i scored ard 200 during my psle almost 20yrs ago, got into a not so good sec sch. my twin sister who scored lower than me have no choice but to go to a NA in a better sec sch.

I started at the bottom of the class and came out top at my ‘o’ level, i did not go to a jc but manage to get myself into a popular course in poly.

as for my sister, she took 5yrs to complete her sec sch, mixed with a batch of not so good friends. took a course in poly that take her to no where. and she’s still struggling today.

if possible, go for express course.

i beg to diff. i scored 199 my time and can only opt for Normal stream. though i spent 5 yrs in sec sch and i must say i scored better than some of the pple from express stream. I got into Poly and then got my degree. quite a number of my frens got into poly and then uni and all of us from normal steam.

so i guess it's not whether express or normal stream you got into. it's the individual and the group of frens you mixed with.

              Yes. I agree with you.

I went through the normal route too 20+ years ago. Went to missionary girls school. There were only 2 normal classes. Was just telling dh that our principal is terrible. She said normal students cannot take principles of accounts, etc...and our subject combination was bad that course selection at poly was tough. If I ever see her, I will tell her she is soooo wrong and she is not fit to be a educator. Subsequently went on to do my degrees, etc... Mum met the mum of my pri school classmate who went to top sec, top jc and local uni and eventually a scholar at the kindy (as our kids are in the same kindy). The mummies were sharing salary, etc... and mum was surprised to learn that I am earning more than my scholar classmate. So normal stream is not a life/ death sentence. It all depends on individual.

But of course... as parents now. I hope the kids don't repeat my route as I hope they have a smooth sailing path.... that's what all parents wish for.

Selection of friends have nothing to do with academic results. Its a form of personal choices and we shall not be judgmental of that. Im sure for someone who came out top in class can tell this apart...

I’ve never even heard of Yuying or Guangyang before. I would say Bartley.

heard that Guangyang is not a good school?

I think that COP can provide you a clearer picture of what the school is performing in terms of academic only.
For instance, Woodlands Secondary’s COP is just 188. However, after interacting some kids from that school, that school provides holistic education for the kids. The kids managed to went to good schools after their secondary schools. There are pupils who scored 7points in ‘O’ levels as well yet they cannot show it through their COP. Although some may say that the good kids are minority, the teachers are devoted in teaching the kids well. I’m just a parent, not any educator and I had friends whose their kids studied there. Furthermore, it is just a neighbourhood school. I just feel that such schools should be promoted further, instead of determining whther a school is good through their COP.

For children to go into NA stream and do well enough to get into Express stream, they need to be very motivated and disciplined. As far as I know, only one student in my secondary school managed to get into Express stream in Sec Two.

If it were my child, I would want him to go Express, rather than risk being disappointed another time if he can’t get into Express stream after working hard.

A colleague wanted to place her daughter at Normal stream to go to a better school but her private tutor advised her to go for Express at an unheard of school. The last I knew, my colleague was glad that she heed the tutor’s advice. She said that the daughter is more sensible now, and forms a study group with her friends.

A parent who had sent three kids to secondary school also told me that he and his wife regretted sending one of his kids to Normal stream altho the kid went to a good school.

Ultimately, it is the classmates that matter. Not the school itself.

If the kid choose to go Express but doesn't work hard enough, he/she can also end up in NA in Sec 2.
