James said that his sister was coming over that afternoon.

I think. Though I'm not sure on the was. Might be is.

        Is this answer correct:

KRR[/quote]I don't think so because going over implies going someplace else, instead of coming.

No sooner had the referee blown the whistle than the striker scored a goal.

Check out this link for the usage of \"no sooner than\".
              http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/radio/specials/1535_questionanswer/page61.shtml

Also contrast with the usage of \"Hardly...when\" and \"Scarcely...when\",
Eg Hardly had the referee blown the whistle when the striker scored a goal.

              Hope the above helps.

                  Hi,

Earlier I had posted a question on Direct & Indirect speech.
James: \"My sister is coming over this afternoon.\"
                  James said _______________________________

Given ans: James said that his sister was coming over that afternoon.
My answer: James siad that hsi sister was going over that afternoon.

Followingly I have another question which confuses me.

                  She said, \"Come here. girls.\"
                  She asked ________________.

Given ans: She asked the girls to go there.
My ans: She asked the girls to come there.

Can some grammar expert please explain, when does the 'come' int eh question change to 'go' and when it does not.

                  Thanks in advance.
                  KRR

                      Hi KKR,

I am no language expert, but will try to answer your question.

When we change from direct to indirect speech the general rules are as follow :

                      1) Time Change
                      this afternoon β€”> that afternoon

                      2) Pronoun change
                      my sister β€”> his sister

                      3) Tense change
                      is coming β€”> was coming
There is no need to change the word of a tense from come to go.

                      Hope it make sense.
