PAP was unaware of SMS exchanges
(source: http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest+News/Singapore/Story/A1Story20121217-389894.html)
Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean clarified that he did not know about the exchanges when Mr Palmer had first approached him over his extramarital affair with Ms Ong on Dec 8.
The New Paper revealed in a report last Thursday that it had received the exchanges from an unnamed source on Dec 8, and speculation has been rife that it was this that drove the former MP to resign from politics.
The exchanges showed intimate conversations between Mr Palmer, 44, who had been MP for Punggol East Single Member Constituency, and Ms Ong, 33.
Ms Ong, who had been a constituency director of the Pasir Ris West office, tendered her resignation last Monday, said the People's Association (PA).
Mr Teo, who is also an MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency, said: \"The important thing is (that) he has taken responsibility for this and he has stepped out.\"
The MP had been speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Deepavali celebration event in Rivervale Drive in the Punggol East ward.
Mr Teo said that one of his top priorities for Punggol East residents is to see to the resolution of upgrading works at Rivervale Plaza shopping complex.
Works there have been delayed because the contractor has gone bust, he said.
Later yesterday afternoon, Mr Teo went door to door at Block 193 to hand out leaflets detailing the next Meet-the-People Session, to be held today.
He said that he will attend the session, along with Minister of State Teo Ser Luck, who has been tasked with overseeing the ward.
During the block visit, Mr Teo said that residents raised issues, such as the cleanliness of the area. But, by and large, they \"were very satisfied\" so far, he said.
He added that those who mentioned Mr Palmer said that they were very sorry to see him go.
Mr Teo said that the residents felt that Mr Palmer had done good work as an MP, and they hope that this will be carried on.
At a separate community event yesterday, PA chief executive director Yam Ah Mee said Ms Ong was a \" very good staff\" member.
He said that he felt \"so sorry for her\" and urged the public to give Ms Ong \"space to move forward\" to address her issues.

Pretty well-thought out article. Agree with some of the points, which are quite similar to why I think WP's win 'bo bao'.5 REASONS WHY WORKER’S PARTY MAY NOT WIN PUNGGOL EAST BY-ELECTION

There will be a percentage of 'die-hards' of supporters from either side, and they vote for the party, not the person. The swing voters will make the difference.
Also very interesting to see that this round if WP sends LLL again, as it will be similar fighting points as Desmond Lim from Hougang, unless WP can come up with other convincing reasons. Perhaps being a female will make some difference. This is based on the assumption that PAP will send in someone more heavy weight, more mature and experienced. I think if PAP sends in a female candidate, the \"cat fight\" will be an interesting one too.
Looking at how the MSM is flooded with articles to express that EMA is 'common', 'should not use that to judge the ability of a politician' etc., it won't be a surprise if people start to agree with it.
Personally, I am very pessimistic when I see so many such articles. First of all, imagine what would have been the case IF it had been another opposition member in that situation. This won't be happening.
Secondly, with the way the public is treating the various EMA cases, including how the WP had dealt with YSL's case, we see the public's moral tolerance with regards to EMA. However, with Palmergate, I see not only are we starting to question we ourselves are morally too 'intolerant of EMA, we start thinking it is like bread and butter.
HOW ON EARTH IS IT THAT NOW THAT A PAP MP IS FOUND TO BE ALSO GUILTY OF EMA, WE START TO LOWER OUR MORAL STANDARDS AND START TO THINK EMA IS 'NOT SUCH A BAD THING'??? 新加坡人到底有没有脑的?
This goes to show HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR OUR ELECTED LEADERS TO BE A ROLE MODEL FOR OUR FUTURE GENERATION. Would this be what we, as parents, want our children to become? I am totally disgusted. The more I read the MSM on how 'honorable' his admittance is, the more disgusted I feel.
I don't think the current PAP can hold itself as it used to be, and not as 'straight' as it used to be. When their people make mistakes, it becomes ok. I don't know, maybe I am the one that is 老头脑. -

I think most likely we have become somewhat numb 痲木 to such scandals happening in SG especially for year 2012. That it no longer shock our nerves when one scandal after another got bust in the news like an overwhelming avalanche.

Thanks Gooby, for your comments. You have a point there. But that doesn't mean it has become acceptable now, yes?

i dont think EMAs have become more acceptable. yet with all the sex scandals in 2012, it makes EMA more noticeable. like anyone and everyone can get involved in an EMA. that is a really scary thought
any political party can have the most stringent criteria in selecting their candidates. all it takes is for that candidate to be weak for that one time… -

I am furious as I see it happening to people around me, people whom I know. The hurt that the family feels. And here we are, a minister I respect. What do I tell my kids? \"Don't be like this man?\" How do you answer questions like, \"Why is it wrong?\" And how about now the media is saying that it isn't actually 'wrong' because it is not 'illegal' in the first place. So, what, mummy is the wrong one? And the child comes around one day telling me, \"Hey, mom, come on! Everyone else is doing it!!!\" -

Now that you mentioned it....

First, YSL.. (kena whacked the hardest).. MSM hitting hard at the man.. no attempt to dig out the woman
Then, the CNB and SCDF..?
Then.. lastly.. the MP.. with MSM hitting hard at the woman and all attention on her.. while the man's act being promoted as \"honorable\"..
The sequence of events.. seems to be in favor of the MP's exposure (which, could have been inevitable somehow due to evidences in someone's hand? How long was the affair and did it started before YSL?)
hmm.........
