Hi T101,
Hi, son is in Express but will in IP year 3 next year. These are our experience:T101:
Hi parents, my DS is going into Yr 2 next year and trying for the IP. Need some parental advice.
(1) Sec 1 & Sec 2 results - what kind of sec 1 results (my son did a 68% in yr 1 - but got A1/A2 for Maths, Physics, Geo & English) and sec 2 result are they looking at? Also at sec 2, is it just CA1 & CA2?
(2) HAST test - How bad can this get? And if my DS has never failed in any subjects, got strong A1 in Maths?
(3) CCA & Leadership - He's into competitive sports (trained 5 times a wk) and no particular leadership roles? How much does CCA play in selection criteria?
(4) Teacher's recommendations? Which teacher plays a bigger part? Form teacher?
(5) Interviews - What kind of Qs and what do they look out for?
Pardon for the long q, but I know I can always count on the close ACS community for help. Thank you.
1. Generally, do need consistent good results in year 1 and year 2 (up to mid year). My son managed to obtain more than 80% for year 1 and year 2. His friends that got into IP also did well in their studies, between 70% to 80%.
2. Unable to provide info on HAST test as son not required to take test, results >80%.
3. Important to do well in the Interview. Understand from son that it is not difficult, just show confident when answering. As for the interview questions, the boys do share the questions after the interviews. Ask your son to engage his friends.
4. Son totally involved in his competitive CCA and did not have other activities. Understand that some of his friends were selected simply based on their CCA involvement.
5. Teachers' recommendations are taken into consideration. Son had a couple of wonderful subject teachers who know him well. Important for your son to engage his teachers.
Thank you for sharing your experience. My DS will have to do his best and show improvements and enthusiasm in Yr 2. Am sure at P2, the standard will go up as most kids who are motivated (or parents) would put in their best.
How many places will be allocated to the year 2 express for entry into ib year 3 each year? Is the year 1 and 2 syllabus similar for express and ib? Wil the express boy be able to cope upon entry into ib year 3? -
Hi Parents of ACS(I) students,
My son is going to Sec 1 next year. I got the info from the orientation pack that there will be 15 Sec 1 classes altogether (1.1 to 1.15). I have a couple of questions concerning class allocation:
1. Is it true that the Express classes are relatively larger (30 over students) while the IP classes only have 25-26 students?
2. How are the students allocated to their Sec 1 classes - by PSLE T-score?
TIA!

Sorry to ask this so late.
Is HCL being taught in school itself ie. within ACSI compound or have to go external MOELC like other 3rd languages?
Thanks. -
twilight:
Sorry that group 2 Chinese B is referring to the IB Chinese B, applicable to year 5 only.
The year 1-4 CL B is the MOE O level one. HCL is the hardest, followed by CL, then CL B.
Hey, Twilight... many thanks. Now, I know...

Hi All
Very new here. May l know if there is any benefit for a Sec 1 IP taking on HCL? I can understand the benefit for O level as the -2 points is attractive for going to JC but for IP students? Heard HCL is tough and if there is no benefit other than the love of the language, perhaps should drop HCL?
If a Sec 1 IP student drop HCL, does it mean he will take O level Cl at Sec 4 and thereafter at 5th or 6th yr takes A level Chinese?
Any one knows the "drop out" rate from IP to O level approach?
Thanks and Merry Christmas -

Hi, autolycus.
My son is going to ACSI for IB next year thru DSA.
May I know what's the difference between taking CL and HCL? In all aspect.
What is the advantage of taking HCL?
I am advised against taking HCL, and was told that if taking HCL it means the pupil is no longer eligible to do CL. Is it true that it's either CL or HCL?
(Sorry, I am quite confused about this, cos in primary school, HCL is a separate subject, whereas CL is a compulsory MT subject. )
Thank you.
Higher Chinese (HCL) is Mandarin Chinese taken at first-language level. CL is a second-language subject and is easier. Passing HCL at Year 4 fulfills the local bilingual requirement, freeing up the alternative language slot in Year 5 for another language if desired (e.g. Spanish, German, French, Hindi). Otherwise, the student must continue to take Chinese in Year 5.
Yes, it's true that it's either HCL or CL. However, if your son is good at Chinese, I'd advise doing HCL. That gives him more options all round.
Cheers!
