CCA for secondary one

Is cca point deduction important for IP students? Do they need those 2 points to get into the jc at year 5?
No, IP students do not need. Which i feel is a good part of being in an IP school. I can join whichever CCA that I enjoy. I used to be in a top-notch sport in my school, given many leadership opportunities through that, lots of achievements through taking part in comps. But i left the CCA (cause i know i'm not interested in it and i don't want to waste my time building up portfolio by doing a sport which i don't enjoy) and joined another sport (which isn't doing very well in my school as it's not a niche CCA). But i'm enjoying myself very much now as it is where my passion really is and what i really like. -

This is a relief as my dc would like to try out and learn something new. Hence, all the talk about the CCA choosing you and how important it is to get those points had me very worried. In fact, she was upset when I told her that she may have to try out for the strings ensemble (which we think should not be a problem) to avoid the UGs (she's a tofu) and earn those points which we were not sure on its application for IP students.rains:

Thanks! I read somewhere on this forum that not getting good points for cca might affect your chances at getting into popular faculties at university level. The person quoted an example of a student who couldn't get into medicine even tho he got straight As for his academic results, bcos he wasn't actively involved in cca (which implied that he didn't get good grades for his cca).rains:

If the above is true, then it means that you still need to do well in a cca no matter which path you take, O level or IP? -

If you're aiming to get into a highly sought after course like medicine you will need excellent grades, good CCA record and passion imo. The interviewers have this uncanny ability to see past whatever facades you may have. -

Though IP students dont require the 2 pts of CCA deduction for JC or yr 5 entry, rains:

In my gal's IP school, CCA pts is used as bonus pts towards the computation of overall GPA
at the end of yr 4. -

How to find out the impact of CCA points on IP/IB students ? Usually who in the school can answer these queries ? Do the school tell the year 1 students during orientation ? or maybe on reporting day ?Though IP students dont require the 2 pts of CCA deduction for JC or yr 5 entry,

Ok, firstly, i think....perhaps not every IP/IB school use CCA pts as a bonus pt for their pupils' overall academic grades computation.

I am speaking on behalf of my gal's IP sch....
Frankly, i wasnt aware that CCA pts plays a role in their GPA computation till my gal was in sec 3 ,
was told that having A1/A2 in LEAPS will come in useful when comes to end of the yr 4 GPA computation.
U can check this out with the respective sch with the CCA teacher-in-charge...... -
For a club such as "robotics" or "entrepreneur club", would it be difficult to get the 20-25 points (for A1 or A2)? thanks

Yeah most likely, unless you are super good and always win comps. Or you are club president, also get leadership points. Easiest CCAs to get points is UG but need to commit 4 years, cannot change otherwise all points gone. -

If the above is true, then it means that you still need to do well in a cca no matter which path you take, O level or IP?[/quote]Ofcourse CCA Records are still important
If the CCA itself isn't really doing well in terms of achievements, i'm sure there are other means of getting a good record, such as holding a leadership position in the CCA or perhaps just being actively involved. My school also has this 'CCA Grade' thing that is reflected on our progress report, though not calculated into GPA. Usually if one participates actively (go down for trainings, practices frequently) and has good attitude, an 'Exceeding Expection' score isn't too hard to get.
And according to my teachers, universities also look at how committed you are in a CCA
If during a 6-years IP, and one keeps hopping CCAs [I really know of people who have joined more than 4 CCAs (at different times) and quitted within the first 4 years of school], I think it wouldn't say much about that person's character. But of course we are always open to choices, just don't try them too much.
