Wow! There aren't many ppl learning violin and cello together (I'm piano and cello) and I'm planning to audition for the chinese orchestra 0.o wonder if it is good.
Omg hi!
I'm not very sure about strings, but most ccas like band with huge instruments have a storeroom for their instruments~Choco05:
Regarding String Ensemble CCA audition and practices, just wondering if the kids have to bring their own instruments or use the school's ? Dd said she will only audition on the violin as she will not carry her cello to school. This is sad as we both prefer the soothing sounds of the cello to the violin, of late.
For the audition, do they need to bring copies of their exam certs (we'll need to search for them  ) and list down past performances ? Two contrasting pieces and a sight-reading pc or will anything do ?
I'm so praying dd will not have to join UG after I saw the muddy school field.
Oh God, the shoes, socks.......... I know I am shallow but I'm the house-maid!
UGs don't march in the field, but mostly around the netball court area btw.
I am in Chinese orchestra
yup it will be good if you would like to join, but since you play the cello, I guess you can audition to either strings or CO, because in CO we need quite a few cello players to make up the whole bass section.
Good luck for auditions and you can ask me any questions regarding CO ^^

Also, re: the instruments, I'm not exactly sure about Cello but I know for sure many other instruments need to be brought to school every practice, such as Violin and Viola (Strings) and Guitar (Guitar Ensemble)

Handbells are provided in school. For Band, certain instruments you'll take home to practice, and you can bring them back by un-assembling them and packing them into little compact cases then re-assembling them
Chinese Orchestra has larger instruments also, such as the yangqin, and there is a school set of instruments that you can use, and then practice on your own one at home
I think this similar arrangement is also made sometimes in Guitar, etc. so you may try it with the Cello if you've got your own Cello at home
Do note, however, that the quality of school instruments may not be as good, so you may still be lugging the Cello back and forth for performances and important pracs and the like
Still, it beats having to do that every practice. (And it is pure speculation about using school Cellos, but it's done with a few other instruments so maybe, plus I've never seen anybody lugging such large instruments around)
Yup in CO this is normally the case for the bigger and heavier instruments. Basically only erhu and dizi people bring home their instruments almost all the time haha and for the pipa/zhongruan, most of them have their own instrus at home so they don't have to lug their instruments everywhere. For those who go assigned to heavy instruments such as the sheng/cello/double bass/etc. , they would sometimes stay back for awhile after practice to prac abit more before going home since they don't have their own instrus at home. But sometimes, like my batchmate who does not have her own cello yet, she brings home the school cello once in a month/ when there is a ng break to prac at home

Hi, I'm starting at RGS next year. I just want to know if I can join fencing without any prior experience, cuz it sounds interesting but i havent tried it before.
Hi Keldeo though you do not have any prior experience, you are still free to try out for fencing during the CCA trials, and may be accepted into the CCA too! The most important thing is that you enjoy the sport, and are willing to try out for it

Lol, thank goodness. It was the softball players that I saw on Thurs in their white outfits. Lordy, I saw their pants and shoes were muddy.
Some UGs usually use the amphitheater area I think, and GB / NCC uses the netball courts. NCC also does runs around the track, they don't use the fieldsChoco05:

The only CCA that uses the field, I think, is a sport (softball)

Ha ha, I'd seen from this thread somewhere that the bookshop is a very 'dangerous' place to visit cos you'll surely come out buying somethings. Maybe shld cut down expenses to $5 daily instead!
Haha the school bookshop sells all kinds of items, from basic stationery to Care Bears!
I must agree that it is a rather 'dangerous' place to visit when you have a limited allowance XD

Thanks Choco05, a Child and chatterbox321 for info on the cello.
Jakaranda, you should try out the CO. My dd joined the CO in the bass section for the Spore Composers Asso Concert and it was a wonderful experience for the 2 of us. It really opened up our eyes (and ears) on how beautiful some of the sounds that are produced by the chinese string instruments. The chinese flute too produces the most wondrous music. -
Any seniors/parents can kindly advise on badminton and table tennis as CCA? Do the Girls need prior experience or be in their primary school national teams to join? Which other CCAs do not need prior experience to join?TIA

So far, how reliable has the Mac been? Does one need to constantly "run" to the helpdesk to ask for help? In case of breakdown, does vendor try to resolve the problem asap since the Mac is needed most of the time?
Also, is the Mac Air sluggish as comapred to the Pro? Iām asking coz still deciding between the Air and Retina Pro (but pro is aboyt 300g heavier).
Thank you for any advice! -

Most CCAs don't require prior experience per se, and rather I think they're looking for a fit. In my experience, even for sports, there are many who were rejected with prior experience, and others who may not have prior experience may be accepted. Now, don't be fooled by the \"no prior experience\" part, most who were accepted to sports, even if they did not have much experience in that particular sport, do have a rather sporty background, meaning they have good stamina, arm strength, can run fast, etc. etc. For example, we have table tennis players joining basketball and basketballers joining track. Hence, if your kid is really fit, she has a decent chance at a sport (except skills-based ones, such as maybe sailing).
Don't be limited in what you want for a CCA, because many don't end up with what they'd have wanted, but most end up being happy for their CCAs. If you're sure you want a sport, and are rather fit / sporty, but do not have much experience, I suggest you try your hand at things like generic sports whose training focus on stamina/strength as much as sport-specific skills, such as basketball, netball, track. Sports such as shooting where everyone starts without experience can be good fits as well.
