All About Learning Tamil

Hi mummies…
Do you have your DS or DD in Hindi class? Kindly need you views on sending my 4year old DS to a Hindi class. He is currently in a local kindergarten for Nursery and we have enrolled him in an Indian International school for K1 from Jan 2013…means he will be joining the class on the last term. The school has Hindi as subject from K1 onwards and my DS has no knowledge about Hindi as we don’t speak hindi at home. And joining in the middle of the year is going to be even more difficult for him to cope up. So we are thinking about sending him to Hindi class to make him familiarise with the simple words and letters. We stay in Chua Chu kang and there is a hindi class going on nearby in teck whye. Do anyone send your kids there? What are the classes like and the fees? Will they take a kid inbetween? Is there one-to-one class? Or any mommies know any home tutors in hindi ? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks -
Have you tried the tuition classes conducted by the tamil teachers union at Umar Pulavar Tamil Lang Center. Our MTL is Tamil - My DH can read write as he studied in Singapore. I studied Hindi in India but can speak basic Tamil and read basic also. My K1 DD goes to UPTLC for classes as she learns Mandrin in school. She likes it there. I know they have Sat classes for older children too. Seen many coming for tuition and very reasonably priced. Dunno how she will cope from P1 onwards as I cannot read complex words / sentences. Banking on DH to pitch in then.

I did call the Tamil Teachers Union (TTU) a few years ago. Several attempts and redirected phone numbers later, I finally got to speak to a man, but he was too busy to speak to me!
So I gave up. No help from SINDA. No help from Umar Pulavar. No help from TTU. So hard to find committed Tamil tutors. -

you need to get someone to have one to one sessions with your child. early exposure and support are needed.

Dear jibbi2, as I explained in my earlier posts, I understand about one-to-one, early exposure, support, but I haven’t been able to find anything or anyone who can do a good job. The current tutor is good, but she’s only doing this while looking for a fulltime job. -

She uses various things, mostly supplied by us. There are other children in my husband’s family who studied Tamil years ago and who fortunately saved their books.

Few points I would like to share to improve kids in Tamil language.
1. Understanding the language-very basic step for the kid to develop interest in Tamil.For this parents must speak Tamil at home,in case parents don't know to speak then take the help of TV programs(vasantham,vijay,sun-there are some good programs in these channels,so let them watch),there are good websites for learning Tamil(http://www.kidsone.in/tamil/index.jsp).This website has interactive games,worksheets,rhymes,stories..so allow your. Hold for 15-30mins to spend time in watching these,parents have to sit with them and enjoy learning.
2.Help your kids to master all the alphabets.All the textbooks have this one in the last page.Teach them to read aloud and write all the alphabets.Ask the kids to write these everyday(takes 10 mins) until they master this one.When they master this,then kids become more confident in reading.
3.Read to your kids-start with books with simple words(books you can get from Raj publications or library).Ask your kids to choose according to their interest and sit with them to read.School library has got age appropriate books.
4.When we practice all the above everyday,with in a month or two,kids will become confident in reading.When they are able to read and understand what they are reading,50 % of the work is done.Go through few question papers and you will know where the kids need to concentrate.So slowly help them to improve in those areas.
5.Writing-practice is the only way.Start with simple sentence,practice lots and lots of question papers.
