      Hi mummies,

For my our case, DS has poor attitude towards studies. His P5 result was only in B and C grades. I realized that he did not put in efforts in his work. Thus we recruit tutor for the subject he dislike which is Chinese. As he was also weak in English, we also find him a tutor too. Our weekday evening were busy as there are tutors and piano teachers coming to our house. As for Maths and Science, DS attended weekend group tuition.
Even though DS was at neighborhood school,he was given many PSLE practice paper after the SA1 especially for English. During the Sept holiday, I noticed that DS anyhow completes his school worksheets, he did not even answer to the question for the open ended comprehension. He just wanted to complete those worksheet on time. I was fuming and I scolded him for his bad attitude towards his work. And I wanted him to redo those questions that he did not do properly.
My message to parents that preparing their kids for Psle, we have to be the "monitress" towards children studies although having tuitions. Some kids got to be "push" to obtain better grades. Kids need our 'physical’support to their studies. We really have to study with them rather than screaming. After going through those past year papers and tuition papers with DS, I got to know the subject expectation especially for Science.
We are glad that DS grades has improved after the effort. It shows that he is more careful and cautions on his work.

I believe the starting point for preparation is for the parents and child to sit down and understand the goals and expectations of each other. Not every child wants to go to RI or RGS and not every parent expects the child to get >270 for PSLE.

This mistake of what a child or parent wants leads to anxiety which can and will affect the PSLE preparation. Get the talk done NOW! Let the parent and child know what each other hopes for and see each other’s point of view. The 11/12 year olds of today is very different from the 11/12 year old of 30-40 years ago (the parents).

The talk is a talk and not a shopping list of what the parent expects of the child. It is to "talk to" and not "talk down" to the child.

Once the talk is done and parents and child have had a chance to digest the expectations and hopes of the other, then have the 2nd talk and reach the understanding of what is the common or agreed upon expectations and goals of both parties.

        Now with that done, then plan of action must be discussed and I propose the following in no particular order;
        1. What are the weak subjects or areas in each subject?
        2. What is child’s solution to deal with weak subjects? (remember child is sitting not parents from 30-40 years ago)
        3. Does parent agree with solution and can parent support it?
        4. If not supportable (financially, illogical or too difficult to achieve), what can parent propose as solution(remember parent is the guide, so guide!!)
        5. Set the timetable to implement solutions for weak subjects or areas
        6. Give support by encouraging child that with the timetable the weak subjects or areas WILL be overcome and continue to remind child that other subjects or areas not to be neglected
        7. Parent must find the time to continue to guide and make sure child sticks to timetable.
        8. Parent must make time to sit down and TALK about child’s progress and what anxieties child faces. These should be regular TALKS and 5-10 mins 1-2x a week should be enough. Do not over stress child but at the same time help child to pace.

Each child is different so time to TALK, frequency of TALK is for u to decide, you are the parent/guide. You are guiding your child on his travel along the PSLE pathway. At the end of that PSLE pathway there will other paths to walk on.

YES that is why i am so proud of his school he got the best teachers every yr. Being in a neighbourhood school may not be such a bad thing after all.

She told him to prepare a list lof goals for the year to pass to her amazingly though she is not teaching him anymore she still cares alot for him, i am very touched.

Though in secondary school (at least in mine) that is not the case. The best teachers teach many classes, and the bad teachers also..
