All About Preparing For Primary One
-
LeeTaiTai,
Yup, there are assessments conducted during first wk of P1 to identify students who need to attend the Learning Support Programme or LSP, for Maths and English.
From my observation, in my dd1’s school class allocation is not based on the results of the tests, class allocation is arranged before the assessments and the kids remain in the same class after the assessments. But I’m not sure how it’s done in other schools. -
Thanks for sharing, SAHM. Maybe they should have LSP for Chinese , my DDs Chinese is really weak.
-
I also wonder why there’s no LSP for Chinese heehee.

in schools like Ngee Ann primary, they have a different terminology.
they don't call it LSP (Learning Support pgm) Chinese.
instead, they call it \"Bridging\" program (Chinese).
advanced pupils attend HCL.
regular pupils attend CL.
weak pupils in Chinese are identified out by lao shi from respective classes -
attend \"Bridging\" Chinese.
usually, foreigner kids who seldom speak Chinese at home, or very little exposure to Mandarin at home, tend to fall into this category. -

Oh ya!!! Now I remember, in a parents' briefing the Chi department did mention abt the above. There are 3 levels for chi, but I forget, does the programme start in P1 or later.LeeTaiTai:

I think it's initiated by MOE, so should apply to all schools bah. -

My child enjoys going to her church kindergarten (her kindergarten always wins MOE awards for learning centres.) what worry me is the academic that is a bit lacking. The school believes in hands on experience activities but not tons of worksheets. On my side, I like her kindergarten so much but I have to teach and supplement my child to improve her standard to my expectation. The K2 reader in her school is so easy that my daughter said it's too simple. I cannot depend on the school 100%. I think all parents have to teach your children up to your expectation that you think your child is capable of.subjective.
depends on your child's kindergarten - whether they prepare them enough for P1. Various kindergarten differ in academic standard.
i)
if you think your child's kindergarten is insufficient in preparing them, can visit any MindStretcher branch, closest your home. Request to take a look at their sample K2 worksheets (English & Maths). Just politely ask, \"may i take a look at K2 English & Maths worksheets ?\" They allow customers to stand there at the admin counter & review. As you flip through those K2 worksheets, you'll know what are the topics they cover for P1 Prep.
when your child bring back worksheets from his kindergarten -
when you check / flip through, you'll know the kindergarten standard. Your gut feel can tell. If the worksheets are a few miserable pieces / pages and content too simple, then perhaps good to attend.
ii)
however, if your child comes from a reliable (not fake one) Montessori kindergarten, then perhaps no need - esp. if their daily Montessori curriculum had been modified to suit / cater to MOE P1 Preparation requirements. Then, maybe just go for Chinese enrichment, esp. if their daily Chinese kindergarten core curriculum is weak. -
