              Hi jocondo,

Sorry for the late reply as we are travelling still in London at the moment.
Staying up North has in fact limits our children in their choices.

We were like you, Nan Hua has never come across our mind during the shortlisting process. Even when someone suggested to us and we thought it is so far until we went to the open house. Our choices initially were RV, Bukit Panjang, St Nic, Anderson........
Hi Justsay, thanks for sharing. So it looks like the selection criteria should not just based on COP and distance....something I need to rethink.

And congrats for being posted to ur 1st choice ! 🙂

                  Hi all,

Generally speaking over the years, Nan Hua High School has had a larger proportion of girls compared to boys because comparatively, more girls outperformed the boys at the PSLE. In addition, one must not forget that Nan Hua had its roots as an all-girls school too although it is now co-ed. As such, it’s history as a former all-girls school does go some way in explaining why it has the 2 plaits policy. The 2 plaits policy is based on the tradition and school culture given its staunch Chinese cultural heritage. Well, this policy may be reviewed in due course as it may become obsolete with time.

Regarding the comparison with other schools such as Crescent Girls’ School, one has to be discerning in the choice of schools placing focus on the desired outcome(s) one wishes to have of one’s child. Undeniably, Crescent Girls’ School has a higher English language standard than Nan Hua but it’s Mandarin standard pales in comparison. It is unfair to say that students from Nan Hua are not as effective a communicator or that Crescent has a much better programme in place to build up public speaking skills and confidence because irrespective of the school, such linguistic and oral capabilities are built up over time. Such notions of building up students’ confidence in public speaking are enshrined in the MOE’s education goals. As the world shifts its focus to China, it is also important to be effectively bilingual and that is an advantage of going to a SAP school.

Nan Hua, being steeped in Chinese tradition, will inculcate the character values that are reflective of the Chinese culture. As the world shifts its focus to China, it is also important to be effectively bilingual and that is an advantage of going to a SAP school.

Overall, Crescent Girls and Nan Hua are pretty similar in their school management systems especially with the use of tablet PCs in both schools for lessons. However, one point stood out for Nan Hua as exemplified by my younger sibling is its strong familial spirit and the bonding the school has managed to imbue in its alumni. My sibling attends almost every school function and visits ex-teachers whenever possible and that’s honestly shocked me. According to my sibling, it is not just him alone but ex-students are very active in contributing back to the school as can be seen in the form of large numbers of CCA student helpers, helpers for major school events and even as relief teachers after the ex-students’ completion of their A-Levels or during their University term break.

My sibling had the opportunity to get into RV but chose Nan Hua over RV because of its closer proximity to our home. As he has now graduated, I can certainly say that he had not made a wrong move in choosing Nan Hua then. Admittably, Nan Hua’s reputation still needs some polishing but it certainly isn’t a bad school and it’s reputation is gradually burgeoning.

Recently, from what I heard, Nan Hua also became the 1st Government School to be fully equipped with air-conditioners in all of its classrooms to ensure that students are best able to perform in a holistic environment.

All in all, I hope the above-mentioned does go some way to allaying the fears of some parents who are apprehensive on sending their child to Nan Hua. With extensive facilities and vibrant school culture, who is to say that Nan Hua is a poor choice? Of course, anything I say now won’t affect the outcome because the posting results are already released. As the common saying goes, only time will tell if the decision made is the right move.
