This week my engine starts to warm up after bringing dd to all tuition classes for the 1st round. DD and i agree that the standard of the tuition material is indeed very much higher for P5…

I take a look at DD1's class time-table while she is packing her bag for tomorrow.


English - 12 periods
HMT - 12 periods
Maths - 12 periods
Science - 5 periods

Club 2002 parents, are your P5s school time-table similar? Was wondering why Science always has a lesser periods compare with others :?

Is each period equal to 30mins? If it is so, then dd's timetable is similar. She has 2 and a half hour weekly for Science whereas the other subjects (English, MT) is 6 hours weekly.

I got DS’s FT notice for the 1st term schedule. In it says that there will be supplementary classes for the entire term ( twice a week on Monday and Thursday from 2 - 4pm. On top of this DS CCA day falls on Tuesday…and occasional House practises !!! So technically he will be in school almost entirely week from 7 - 4.30pm…worst then working…

Now my question is : Is going to these supplementary necessary ? Do we need to religiously follow the school’s schedule just because they are in P5 now and perhap preparing them mentally for PSLE ???

I heard DS said some of his classmates will not be going even though FT mentioned it is compulsory. My DS’s HMT tuition class falls on Wednesday so practically entire study week will end at 5pm not including time for his homeworks or revision…

I like to hear from those whose have past experiences esp the P6 mother if these supplementary classes in P5 are important…thanks…

Gee, I haven’t looked at dd’s timetable yet. I expect her to remember which day to wear her PE attire, and to remind us which day she has her dance classes. She seems to like her new teachers, mostly because they’re funny and tend to joke in class. She comes home to tell me about hilarious episodes in school … which actually doesn’t seem as hilarious when she recounts them. Nevertheless, I try to laugh with her because she has so much fun recounting these incidents.


I’m still mulling over whether I should send her for tuition. She still does not go for tuition for any subject. I think I’ll wait till the mid year exam results are in. What I’ve done is sit her down and discuss her expectations for her own results, and the consequences for her if she fails to meet those results. And to warn her that there is a big jump in academic standard from last year.

What is covered in the Supplementary classes? Is it over and above curriculum to stretch the students? Or spillover from class with additional worksheets? Maybe it’s like group studying without having to go outside for enrichment or tuition?

That really depends on what the teacher is going to cover in the supp class. My ds1 in P6 last yr has to attend supp classes aft sch and beside that the class has to start 1/2 hr before the sch start time, ie. The class starts lesson at 7am and they need not to attend the flag raising...their lesson continue from there. The reason being that they have limited time to cover all the topics + revision, thus, teachers have to extend the hours. Thus, it is impt for him to attend. For P5 students, the teacher may wants to cover more during the supp classes or to go thru the more difficult topics or the class's weak topic, since the teacher has been with the class, he/she will definitely knows what is the class weakness. I personally think that it is wise to attend and thus need not to spend on external tuition..

My boy had hmt today. He said ok. Guess we mentally prep him over the holidays or teacher not full speed yet

He reached home at 345pm, tea break, bathe and took a nap. Just started on his work now!

For my DD1, the HMT is built into their curriculum time and this is also her 1st year having it


She has Chinese lesson today but I have not spoken to her yet as when I called home, my domestic helper said both my girls are having the afternoon nap :snooze:
