Can any sec 1 students or the mummies tell me how you find the school so far. Any complaints? Happy? Please let me know urgently.

Hopefully, I'm not too late in my reply. My dd is in Sec 1 this year n is not an
ex-SCGS girl. So far, she is very happy n likes the program there. She had a great time during their 3-day orientation. She said the seniors there are very nice. She did not feel any sense of snobbishness over there. As parent, I m happy n have no complaint as I feel that they keep parents well-informed most importantly, the P said that they value every student n there is no 2nd class citizen in SCGS.

My dd likes the school and gets along with her peers and seniors, too.

Hi , my daughter is in sec 1 this year. She is not from SCGS primary. She finds her classmates very nice and friendly. We find the teachers are very dedicated and responsive. She is very glad she chose this school! 😄

My DD is in sec 2 this year. She received great help from her form, co-form and CCA teachers. Teachers are friendly and helpful.

I know at least 3 students with 9a1s. One of them you can consider its 10a1s if you include her CL grade.

My DD came back today and said today is the worst day of her life. Why> She has two pop tests Maths and Physic, and everybody was caught off guard. She is so funny. 🤷

                        Hello everyone on this thread!

I am an SC girl who just graduated recently and although I have not read every post on this thread in its entirety, I would just like to share my 2 cents worth about my school and my SC journey here. I have to say, I love sc to no end! I don't mean to exaggerate, but I truly enjoyed my time in this school immensely - especially so in the final year (despite it being the O level year!)

Firstly, (*important point haha!!) I wasn’t a ‘pure’ SC – I joined SC fresh in sec1, from a different primary school. So for kids, or parents of kids, who are from ‘other primary schools, do not fret, you can still have the time of your life in sc! In sec1, the bulk of my class consisted of students from other primary schools and a couple from sc primary. (the bulk of sc primary girls was clustered in other classes as we were ranked by PSLE score) With that said, most of my classmates and I began our SC journey on a pretty clean slate. I won’t say assimilating into SC was like second nature, however, it wasn’t a chore. The girls (both new and old) were very friendly and lovely, which made the process of being acquainted with your classmates a lot easier. [Note: some seniors may be a little cold towards lower sec kiddies initially, but they mean no harm!]

At the end of sec2, the streaming process (not sure if its still the same now with the introduction of the IP prog) broke down the supposed intellectual hierarchy instilled by ranking students using PSLE scores. With various subject combos, streaming threw the class-allocation-system into a huge whirlpool, and everyone ended up in different classes with a shocking number of new faces around. (new as in people you weren’t in the same class with in lower sec, and of course, scholars from overseas joined us) At this point, I remember I only knew a very tiny handful of people personally, and the bulk of my sec3 mates were people whom I have strolled by before in the corridor but have never truly interacted with. So it was a whole new cycle of making new friends and expanding your social circle. However, as you move up to sec4 with your sec3 class, these new friends become some of your closest buddies whom you will brave through the Os with 🙂 But no doubt, by the end of sec4, everyone would know everyone and I guarantee you, that you would have met some of the loveliest and most magnificent people in your life (that I mean BFF till we are all wrinkly and our hair has turned grey and sere haha!)

Ok what else can I talk about? Haha lets talk teachers! For one, the majority of the teachers in SCGS are utterly FABULOUS!!!!! (cross my heart I swear) When I was in sec2, I went through a rather angst period (due to personal issues etc) whereby I was filled with unwarranted detestation for teachers and basically all the adults in my life. I wasn’t a rebel, just a little more unreceptive and mildly disgruntled and simply frustrated at the world - but I guess it was just a growing up phase. However, despite my inexplicably negative shift in attitude, the teachers never gave up on me and most actually tried to reach out to me in various ways. They noted my strengths and worthy attributes, and encouraged me to use them to push myself on. Over time, I mellowed greatly, and became a much better student (it actually got me through a rather tough time!)

So long story short, my point is a large portion of the faculty comprises of some of the best teachers you will ever come across – dedicated, thorough, caring, inspiring; the list of positive adjectives to describe them are simply endless! But especially so in your final year, they really go all out to help every single student to achieve their very very best. With that, I mean they clock in extra hours to help you (recesses, weekends, after-school hours until as late as 8pm during study camp), they teach with patience and passion, they truly care about their students’ learning journey. To a certain extent, they spoon-feed us quite a bit, but this is not to say they do not constantly encourage intelligent thought process as well as the development of keen analytical skills. It is irrefutable that SC teachers really go the extra mile, and they are incredibly fun and lovely at the same time too!

Ok another quick personal insight –at sec 4 prelims, I was lagging behind a little (esp in my sciences) and did not score too well, largely due to my own tardiness and laziness in sec3 and the first half of sec4. Despite being super pressed for time (1 month to Os!) and the pressure-cooker environment we were all subjected to, many teachers were super willing to lend me a hand to catch up and catch my breath. Even teachers who did not teach me personally in sec 4 offered to tutor me in their free slots and to resolve any of my queries. Also, kudos to my chem teacher who practically re-taught me the entire syllabus in a crash-course fashion in the last 2 weeks of so before the actual Os (I got D7 at prelims, climbed to an A2) Mad props to her! So yup, they teachers I have had in Sec3/4 are some of the best I have encountered through my academic life, and I have forged relatively strong bonds with a couple. They simply put so much faith in their students and never gave up hope; really, all we wanted was to do them proud! The teaching staff in SC is undeniably one of its best selling points.

As for the SC culture, I feel it is gradually morphing over the years. When I first entered in Sec1, SC was branded by my fellow peers from other secondary schools as the ‘school for bimbos’. True enough, there were a bunch of your typical bimbos around. However, for my batch, a large number of these girls left us for overseas education or international schools at the end of sec2. Hence, I can pretty confidently say that, for my batch at least, the culture had been replaced with one of greater grounded-ness and sophistication by the time we graduated. As for my juniors, I can’t speak much about the school’s culture at their stage. But with every batch, there are new faces and new personalities, so the culture will definitely evolve, but also be enriched.

Uniforms: just a quite note on this one. Largely, most girls tailor their uniforms once they hit upper sec. Some for vanity reasons (hahaha), others simply to get the right fit. I tailored mine at the beginning of sec 3, because my mom agreed that it was the most practical thing to do since buying new uniform cost about the same as tailoring from scratch. (yes uniform is expensive nowadays!) Its no biggie if you/your kid doesn’t tailor, as long as she is comfortable, that works 🙂
[I do have fond memories though of mocking fresh sec1s behind their backs for ignorantly tucking in their PE tees in the first few weeks of school, when I was in upper sec hahahaha. Not in a cutting or an increasingly mean way, just a cheap thrill at the beginning of new school years 😉 we meant no harm!]

(Hmmmm thats about it I guess. Wow this is a long post hahaha oops got a little carried away!)

The gist of my post here tonight is that, by the end of one’s journey in SC, after braving through the Os and all, one will somehow or another find herself falling in love with this school. I mean, I can’t say with utter certainty that 100 percent of every cohort feels the same way as I do, but I can say, there many who will. So as long as you go in with an open mind and a positive outlook, life in SC can be an absolutely amazing one with perspective-galvanising experiences and memories!

Feel free to direct any questions about SC to me, I’d be more than happy to shed some light on any issues or share my own personal experiences. To new girls coming to the school, make the most out of your time here and just have fun! Once an SC girl, always an SC girl 🙂
