      mummy so kiasu:
P4 to P5 is a big jump. Schools start to prepare them for PSLE in P5 & the standard of P5 & P6 is similar. My boy is in P6 this year & now waiting for the outcome of the sec schools posting. He was also in the top 2 classes of P5 & P6. Some of his classmates who got band 1 for Maths in P4 were struggling to get B in P5 & P6. I still remember that his P4 teacher told the class that students who get band 1 in Maths might not do as well in P5.

Your girl will be taking PSLE in next year & it is going to be a very short year. She will be sitting for a national exam & it does not make any different which class she will be in next year. Anyway, I don't think the principal will allow her to change to another class either. Maybe you should help her to review her P5 syllabus during this school holidays, in order to better prepare her for her PSLE next year. Most of the PSLE syllabus are covered in P5 & all P6 syllabus will be completed before SA1 & term 3 is revision.
Yes, I do agree with you to a large extent. As such, had earlier had a discussion with dd together with dh about P6 expectation, etc. She agreed to just take the status quo and work hard to do her best.
In fact, she has been revising P5 Math and doing a fair bit of work before school starts in a month's time. Hope she could sustain till PSLE.

Anyhow, we'll take a week's break vacationing to recharge and then continue a longer distant. :boogie:

Thanks all for all the postings!

My girl was posted to the top 2 class in her cohort. She is in P3 now. Already last year, when meeting the teachers during the meet-the-parents session, all subject teachers told us it’s different to be in top class and must work very hard fr now on.

Finally had a taste of life when DD started school. 1 week passed, and boy…the amount of work she has is soooooo much. On top of her regular lessons, she has to write Chinese and english journal every week. Do newspaper cutting weekly. Not only that, these 2 days all students in her class has to come out with challenging quiz questions for all to share during maths lesson. They have already been given challenging Maths questions to do, which are quite equvilant to Maths Olympiad style of questions. During the teacher-parent meeting, teacher said they are strongly encourage to take up Maths Olympiad training as enrichment.

I can feel the stress level in me building up as well…it’s a great jump for both me and my DD as there was hardly any homework in P2. Yesterday she was so exhausted that she slept on the table while doing her Chinese homework. Still, I have to wake her up cos she has not come out with those challenging quiz questions yet. Really cannot imagine what will come next when they start teaching Science. Wonder is it the same for other students in top classes as well? Tons n tons of work?

side-track a bit... usually for me i would get my boys to sleep if they are tired. No point focusing them to stay awake to finish the works if they are tired. If they do not have enough sleep, they will suffer the next day during lessons... cannot concentrate and yawning the whole day or get caught by teachers... etc.

              is this an elite school?
i don't remember my boy being overwhelmed with homework in P3....or maybe compared to now (p5), P3 was peanuts  😓
              but definitely no weekly journal.
you have to monitor your child to see how she can cope. i remembered one of my friend approached the teacher to transfer from a better class to a more foundation class...but that was for Mother Tongue. after transfer, the kid was happier and learn better.
the first few weeks of sch is usually taxing for both children and parents. after a while, the kids should be able to adjust much faster than us.
              :hugs:

                Hi coolbaby,

Yes, will better manage the next time, maybe get her to rest in the afternoon…normally my DD is those super energetic type, hardly complaint of being tired. This is the 1st time she felt so exhausted, but cos it’s already 8.30pm and she has not finished her work, so no choice have to ask her to freshen up and get her brain juice working again.

My daughter, in P3 this year, was also posted to one of the top 2 classes, the workload and homework seems manageable leh. She’s from a SHHK school. She’s still quite happy and enthusiastic about her schoolife, have not seen any major jump in standard from P2 leh. I think not every school pushes their top classes very hard or perhaps not at P3?

I was told by other parents that we cannot ask teachers what are the best class. How to find out the best class? Will the kid know? My gal give me a blank look when i ask her.

If you know who are the top 3 students in existing class, just look out for their names when come to class posting. Whichever class these 3 post to the following year should be the best class
