Labrador:
Hi can anyone help with some input on what boys brigade will be like for a cca. Ds is keen but some feedback on requirements, frequency especially of overnight camps and where these camps are held, and whether the camps are quite often held over June and dec hols would be much appreciated. TIA.
Hey Labrador,
Unlike other uniform groups, boys brigade takes place on Saturdays (mostly fr 8:15-12:30). It is quite a well-organized cca with dedicated teachers. Camps wise, all uniform groups are bound to have camps every yr. if my memory didn't fail me, there are about 2 camps per yr in school. the first one will be a 3-day TA (target award) camp during march hols. The other should be at the end of the yr coy camp. The main premise for the camp will be in school. However, they may be brought out for hikes on 1 day of the camp/sleep over at some outdoor campsite. There could also be camps organized by the boys brigade headquarters (eg. Camps which lead to a badge like leadership etc)
Every yr end, all. Boys are supposed to log in at least 2 days to help out with the bb share-a-gift movement at the bb headquarters.
Hope this helps

There's a talk for yr 1s during white space today.. wonder what it would cover...
Hope all the yr 1s have settled in. My little one is having a great time with his new class mates (even though out of the 27 boys in his class, 23 are from feeder schools, and he is not)
have a great wkend, one and all! -

DS seems to be settling in, guess the fact the 22 of them are from non-feeder helps in some way - all new to each other :). But the whatsapp group they setup is getting way too 'trashy'
Everyday they just send a 'yay/yo', a face icon etc & I see hundreds of new wa msg daily.
Anyway, for a start it's good that they are comfy with each other
You have a good weekend too. -
Year 2 boys will be very happy.
No school on Monday.
So 4 more days and they are off for their OEP trip for one week in Malaysia.
Donβt think they can really study next week anyway. -

Does anyone know how the Year 1s are allocated to their classes? There seems to be a mix of ability in all the classes but my DSβs teacher told him that the better Express classes are 1.5 to 1.9?
I also heard from a friend who said that there are boys who enter via DSA Sports who are doing IP although they donβt meet the IP cut-off at 256. I thought that these boys can only do Express and IP is either via DSA-HAST or PSLE t-score.
There seems to be a sizeable number of boys doing HMT, my DS is in the minority who does Normal Chinese. He and two others from his class has to combine with other Express and IP students to form a class for Chinese lessons. I am very surprised because the general perception is that ACS boys are not so pro at Chinese! -
Oodles Mummy:
1. Year 1s are allocated to classes on a semi-random basis. That is, the criteria may include factors such whether they take the same MT subject (because you might have to combine classes and so the timetable must factor that in), what 'stream' they are in, and so on. Apart from such criteria, there is mostly randomness.Does anyone know how the Year 1s are allocated to their classes? 2. Entry by DSA Sports does not preclude sufficient talent in other areas to be in the IP, you know...
3. ACS(I) has had increasing prowess at Chinese for some time. I remember when we surpassed the national average, and also when we started producing decent HCMT grades. Part of it is due to the influence of many PRC students and teachers; part of it is changing demographics.
Oh, by the way, that teacher ought to be censured for releasing confidential information. What an idiot. This kind of situation can occur for many simple reasons: for example, a class where all the boys do HC MT will on average have a higher PSLE score than one where they all do CL MT, right? And that goes back to timetabling constraints.
