No advantage is one thing, but will it be disadvantage to take hcl for IB? Year 5-6 need to take another language if past hcl at year four. What are your views?

Thanks, Jedamum, for asking what's been bothering me.

Appreciate any parents here that have children going though the IB track to share on HCL topic. TIA.

      :thankyou:

Pupils who offer Mother Tongue Language (MTL)(i.e. Chinese/ Malay/ Tamil) or HMTL (i.e. Higher Chinese/ Higher Malay/ Higher Tamil) at the PSLE and are ranked among the top 10% of the PSLE; or are in the top 11% - 30% band who meet the language criteria (i.e. an A* grade in the MTL or at least a Merit in the HMTL)may opt to study HMTL at secondary schools. They may offer English Language and HMTL in the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination at the end of Secondary Four.

There is no advantage in taking hmt in IB . You would not need the 2 bonus points and you would still have to take it in Year 5&6 unlike in A level

That will depend on the school. There are students who've never taken HCL in primary school who are taking HCL in secondary school. And some are doing alright. So it depends on the student. If a school deems that a student is really weak in HCL and is better off taking CL, maybe that's a better route for the child?

I say let your child try it out. She may excel in it for all you know.

            Hi jtoh,

You mentioned that there are students who have never taken HCL in primary school who are taking HCL in secondary school. I thought that only if a student scores merit or distinction in Higher Chinese at PSLE can he/she continue with Higher Chinese at Sec 1? At least this is the case with my DD when she was in Sec 1 some years ago.

There is another category - those who came in the top ??% of the PSLE are offered HCL even if they didn't do it in Pr school. My daughter was offered HCL even though she was exempted from MT in Pr school![/quote]Thanks Slmkhoo! That's interesting. I didn't know that..

I believe top 10% offered HCL in sec school without HCL in primary school. And I think you need at least A for CL to be offered.

Btw, if you’re offered HCL, PLEASE take it. I didn’t and I’m regretting SO much. I got an A2 for EL for Os, and my raw L1R5 is 7. Nett is 5. Whereas my friend who takes HCL, got C5!! for EL and B3 for HCL. So end up, her raw is 8 yet her nett is 4. Still better than mine, despite getting a C5 for EL.

Even if you don’t plan to replace EL with HCL, the 2 bonus points is totally worth it. Seriously. :3

                mummy so kiasu:

My boy is in the top 10% of the PSLE cohort & he did not do HCL. He only get A for his CL, do you think he will be able to cope with HCL?

Yes probably. When I did my PSLE I got A as well and did not do HCL. But at O level midyear managed to get b3 even though my chinese is really quite bad (never speak chinese even during chinese class, memorise cheem phrases and regurgitate when writing essays).

And in most secondary schools as long as you get b3 for chinese they allow you to continue taking hcl. Many of my friends who take HCL got B3 for normal chinese as well.

My dd's MT told the class they need to score A1 in Sec3 ( O level chinese) in order to continue HCL in Sec4.

I have a question on how HCL works in the Secondary School allocation.

Say student A has a T-score of 250 and student B has a T-score of 247+3 (distinction for HCL). If the COP for the school they are applying to is 250, who gets priority? How does this works?

                    Tks

Assuming both of the students are applying for a SAP school. No priority will be given to any of them. It will be base on the digits after the decimal points.
