To those who devalue the role of intellectuals in the fight for the rights of the common man, I refer you to Mr Paul Krugman.

        http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/

He is as anti-big business, anti-austerity, pro-welfare as you could get. Oh by the way, he's also a Nobel Laureate.

As a common man, with day to day life issues, I would love to have someone like this in my corner, to write, to persuade, to influence. A towering intellect does not equate to living in an ivory tower.

It's not all about getting votes.

Although I am not of his political colour, and disagree with large chunks of his views, I do enjoy reading his column, for its depth of analysis, strident tones, and clarity of thought. Much better than TRE or TOC anyway.....

The sinseh's parrot told him not to run but he went down to the nomination center anyway.

Intellectuals are important but as a fiscal conservative, it is my impression that folks like Krugman makes it almost impossible for America to recover unless the govt debt is inflated away. However, inflation is thievery, especially from the middle class (the lower class has nothing to lose and can subsist on more handouts :yikes: ). There is no way a country can remain strong with a weakened middle class.

Incidentally, I have no idea how he got his Nobel prize. 🤷 Perhaps I will read his thesis when I have the time...

All those analysis, thinking, research are pointless if you cannot get yourself into the parliament to make the difference.

In that aspect, I do believe that WP is taking the right path. They do not need thinkers at this point in time, they need workers who are willing to work the ground, gain support, win votes. When they get a stronger foothold in the parliament, the thinkers will come in.

As in 'the ends justify the means?'

What makes you think that once they've become used to winning seats the way they win seats, that they will change anything?

Not heard from CSM for quite a while. Has the intellectual been sidelined?

I won't be able to confirm anything as I am not affiliated to WP in anyway. Just saying that if WP wants to oust PAP from parliament, first priority is for them is to win votes, win seats. Without that, no matter how many intellectual speeches, or in-depth research papers put up are also pointless. 81 vs 6, what kind of changes do you think you can make?

It is proven on GE2011 that majority of Singaporeans are more receptive to WP's non-confrontational way to doing things. If this is what is getting them votes, why change the winning formula?
