Actually, having watched this myself again, and before that the CNA forum in 2011, I noticed how things have changed in Singapore.

Mohd Jufrie Mahmood, then representing SDP mentioned in the Parliament house on that sitting, was ultimately the wiser one! Listen especially to the last part of the video (8:40) when he said how everyone was getting educated in English and would be able to understand one another better, and language would eventually not be a problem. When you watch back the CNA forum with Palmer and the other opposition parties' comments, it's unbelievable. The garmen is still doing things the same old ways, not realizing how our people have evolved.

On GRCs, although a bit side-track here, this video has MP in it....interesting looking back, especially with the 'good standing' comment.

Perhaps - perhaps, the initial intention had been a good one. However, it also became a barrier to entry into parliament by oppositions, until the last GE.

Ya, helping minority to get into parliament which they couldn't do on their own merits due to whatever reasons was d primary reason given for d formation of GRC. In its original form, it does seemed like a fair idea when it was limited to 3 or 4 candidates per GRC. IMHO, it was subsequently abused to favour d MIWs.
u r right dat it was subsequently used to increase d barrier for oppo to get elected n also to bring in MIWs on d coattails of 'heavyweights' in a GRC.

hubby and i were discussing, think it's interesting that Wp appeals to such a wide segment. new faces include lawyers, Nus sociology prof Dan goh, and the rally audience includes such folk as well as the common man on the street. pretty admirable.

Yes, their ability to attract new talents is quite admirable.

Personally, they used to portray WP supporters as those less educated, middle age, chinese educated, etc... but if you attend the rally, you will observed that this is not true. There are alot of young people, professionals, etc... these days.

Yup, think there was a sea change after the 06 elections, and an even more marked one after 2011 elections.

Even folks from other opposition parties have left and joined WP given their strong showing.

Of course, there are some establishment types who have joined PAP too, for the perceived glory or easy tickets into MP allowance territory. I mean, if Tin PL can, who can't right? oops.

Somehow, when I listen to WP speak, it's not just good oratory, but you can FEEL that these people really care about the nation. Their whole SOUL is in what they are saying and pushing for. Whereas all the PAP folks come across as mouthing lines, reluctant-type candidates...

2 things evoke greater deep-seated emotions than language - race n religion.
English is now d 1st Lang in d education system. If d recent survey of students on who they mix with is an indication of d wider society, then we r now worse off than before.

Yes, beyond language, there was race and religion. But 20 years later, the gap would narrow - suggested Jufrie then. And that was what GMS was trying to say - that MP being minority would still win, that minority or not, it doesn't matter any more - and MP did win! The gap had narrowed over the course of 20 years! However, in the course of 20 years, a different gap has emerged - elitism.

So how now? :evil: Shall we have one from each educational background and training to make up GRC instead? :evil: And must include scholars and non-scholars? :evil:

It's not just him either. Look across the new faces introduced in GE 2011. Who amongst them have real fire in their belly? They all look pretty meek.

It's the WP candidates and new faces (even those at the recent rallies) that remind us of the Old Guard PAP.
