MOE is right not to allo teaching of hanyu pinyin. Chinese words have so many characters and you can't sound it out by looking at the word like English. Hanyu pinyin is useful to learn words that you don't know. At preschool, it is more important for children to learn to recognize the word. If your child can recognize say 1500 words in preschool, is there a need to learn hanyu pinyin? And if your child knows hanyu pinyin and the passage contains hanyu pinyin, will your child read the passage using hanyu pinyin or read by looking at the words? Do you see our daily newspapers with hanyu pinyin?

but realistically, if you purchase a copy of P1 Chinese schools ' Term test / exam papers, you'll realize that the bulk of P1 Chinese first half of the year test children on han yu pin yin, a substantial amount !

If start to learn hypy in P1 Term 1, isn't it late if a child can't cope with
hypy ? if child struggle with hypy, so will the parents under stress by then
under time constraint trying to help their child cope

Personally I don't agree with MOE for teaching hypy before a child recognizes enough words. My son is a victim of the system. First when he
was in K1K2 we sent him to PCF cos just below our home. Then i was a
main stream school teacher. I had no time to teach him. He hated Chinese
and me and hubby went to see his teacher, guess wat the teacher said?
\"aiya why learn Chinese, look at me, I know only Chinese, can only be
preschool teacher. \" so, with poor Chinese foundation, he went on to P1.
they started with hypy. So he started to read passages using hypy. If you cover the hypy he could not read. Until now, his Chinese is still very poor. He recognizes very few Chinese word. So mummy, don't get your child to learn hypy just to cope with P1 hypy. Let your child recognize as many
Chinese characters as possible. Not to worry too much about hypy. With this
conviction, I stress the importance of word recognition to my Chinese
teachers. I only allow my teachers to teach hypy from the 4 th term of K2 Our children are doing fine in P1. FYI I was educated in Chinese all the way from primary to university (Nanyang University), I did not know any hypy
until MOE introduced it.[/quote]Hi, I agree with you that it is important to recognise Chinese sight words. I must emphasise that teaching the child recognition of sight words is more important than Han Yu Pin Yin. For my own child, she can remember the sight words easily and has accumulated the basic sight words necessary for her before I introduced Han Yu Pin Yin to her. I bought the first Han Yu Pin Yin flashcards when she was 1 year old. I kept it and only took it out recently. Parents can go to Popular to buy the flash cards from the Primary school Chinese textbooks. Alternatively, you can go to MOE website to download the list of Chinese words that a child needs to know in primary school. I think it's classified under syllabus section.

I did not specifically teach my 5yo to recognize the words based on MOE list but when I checked the list few months back and surprisingly noticed that my son has actually well covered. I will credit it to his preschool, berries, 四五快读,基础汉字 and daily story reading as well as full converse in mandarin with me. (English with daddy).

Btw, I have not introducing HYPY to my son yet as I fully agreed to recognize substantial words is important before learning HYPY. The story books that I bought were mostly w/o HYPY.

My DD in P1 was very upset as her teacher marked almost all wrong for her HYPY spelling just because she put the wrong tone on top of the H Y P Y. In fact all her spelling in Hypy are correct except the tone. My child is perfect in HYPY but really confused with using the right tone. Are they learning Chinese or English?

Yes, my child can spell out the Hanyu pinyin but get confused with the four intonation. This year K2 cannot lax, otherwise go P1 next year I suffer with her.

did your DD Chinese tr give them a list of Chinese words to prepare for tingxie ?
if Yes, ask yr girl to practise inside an exercise book first.
based on the list given :-
Left hand side - write out the Chinese character first,
next column - write out the corresponding hypy sound, with the respective tone 1 to 4. If she still don't get it, play that CD for that hypy book that sembgal recommend. Let her hear so that she get the tone correct.

then you mark her practice, before the actual tingxie day.
nowadays, the Chinese tr v strict. Not only ensure get the hypy spelling correct, the tone must also be correct. Otherwise, they say you're not pronounciating the Chinese word properly, so mark you wrong.

Yes, all K2 parents (kids born 2007) better not be lax with Chinese.
if not, next year 2014 P1 first half of the year (Jan - Jun), not only our poor child struggle hypy, we parents also struggle along.

Actually not only spelling and tone need be correct, you have to ensure all letters are written in small cap. My DS spelt all correctly including the tones all correct but teacher still mark wrong when one of the \"y\" was too big and looks like capital letter. He cried when asking Daddy to sign his tingxie book. In pre-school, it was not this strict so i was not aware of this.

No Chinese character except hypy. I did not even know what word is that. All the pages are in hypy for tingxie (here we also did not put tone on top of the hypy when we quote). I need to search for the Chinese character to write beside the hypy. It is very frustrating.

approach your child's Chinese tr for the tingxie list containing 2 column -
both the Chinese word / character to be tested + corresponding hypy with the respective tone already indicated on it (beside the Chinese words).

if Chinese tr don't have, then approach the Chinese HOD.
say you need this list, to help your child prepare tingxie.

for Normal Chinese, this list is called :-
                      \" 小学 华 文 1A 汉 语 拼 音 认 读 表 \"

for Higher Chinese, this list is called :-
                      \" 小学 高 级 华 文 1A 汉 语 拼 音 认 读 表 \"

She'll distribute to the whole class, to prepare tingxie.

Does anyone know where I can get software to include hypy to be included on top of each 字 in Microsoft word please? For eg, certain 字 is new and when learning spelling/默写, my daughter tends to forget or not familiar. So I type out the whole list in microsoft Word but it is painful to include hypy.

                        Any advice is appreciated.
