DD says that Grp chats in the what apps have updated info when they communicate. Like school works or even grp project. We agree but try to let her know the negative sides of spending too much time in Smsing. She seems to understand but dun know she can endure this for how long?

My p5 has a whatsapp account. But he uses a separate phone for it and that phone is using the home WiFi to receive whatapp messages. His smartphone that he bring to school is disabled for receiving data even mms and also non data plan and we deleted the games.all with his agreement. His classmates has whatapp chat group which is mainly for chatting and we mute the incoming alarm. If there is any group or important stuff, they will create a separate group from random chatgroup. Those with no access,traditional SMS is still used when they need to communicate. When he just started, the novelty is that he tends to want to check until he realises there are a lot of hi bye and chain letter messages. Now he only checks them end of the day,didn't take much time as he prefers to use that time for games. I think it is a boy thing. My dh is not keen on WA too, but I have a few chat groups with friends, even myPIL similarly, I uses home WiFi system which will be disabled when I need to cook, revise work, spend time with kids,etc.

My boy is using pre-paid card with a old-until-drop-on-floor-noone-will-pick-up phone.

Non-smart phone ie no wifi ability.

Yesterday he \"grumbled\" he is one of the few in his class with non-smart phone.

My boy is using an old Samsung phone without internet access. We downgrade his phone since 1st day of Sec 1. He told me that many of his classmates are using iPhone 5.

My iPhone4S has been 'awarded' to DS as a reward for getting into one of the schools we aimed for. So far, he has been quite responsible tho I do think the usage did increase due to easier accessibility. (Eg. on his way home on transport, at home etc).


He has a few wa groups, some his old Pri mates, some his new sec1 & project.
Generally, his sec1 groups are more responsible. They have a 'mod' who will delete & 'ban' the members for an hour when they spam or use vulgarity or when that chat gets heated up. (Hmmmm suddenly realised it sounds similar to KSP ha). While more 'useful', it do tend to get trashy & lotsa topics like soccer, teasing etc. guess inevitable.
The Pri wa group is :slapshead: honestly I found lotsa foul Lang & rubbish. & with some extra unknown girlfriend of someone, I dun like what they wrote (u can call me traditional). Anyway, all I can do is to advise DS on what's right & proper. Fortunately, he just glance thru most 'trash' & does not respond much.
Eventually, I believe it's hard to stop them. For long term, it's better to educate our kids on how they should behave & be responsible & not succumb to peer pressure :love:

I know this topic has been discussed before …to certain extent but would like to ask which CCA you would like your DC to avoid other than not considering those CCA that need practising too often in a week. I find that CCAs like NCC, NPCC, these students almost involved in most of the school events. Besides attending to their normal drilling n marching practices, you can see them standing on guards along the school driveways, halls whenever there are school events, or also at times awaiting for some VIPs’ arrival. I would wonder how much will that help the students Students’ school work progress? Your thoughts on this?

I would wonder how much will that help the students Students' school work progress? Your thoughts on this?

I remember my younger days...when I was in NCC, I often stand in the hot sun till xiao. Waiting for some impt guests to come. Really waste of time when I think of it now.

That level of commitment is the reason why those in UGs can get points so easily. As they say, no pain no gain.

All the practices, extra time spent doing guard duty etc with Saturdays burnt, is the poor child able to find time to revise ? 7 subjects isn't easy at all. My crazy husband asked son to join NPCC :mad: ...I almost slaughtered him. Next week, suppl lessons begin...will reach home close to 5pm and just beginning Sec 1. :nunchuk: :rant: :stompfeet: is that man crazy ?

Find out his interest and whether he is keen or not.

My DS is joining St John although he initially was more interested in joining club and societies. This was after he went for trial session. Told him that he is older now and any decision he makes, he must bear the consequences. Told him he cannot anyhow want to change like in primary school as CCA points are important when he wants to get admission into JCs after O Level.

He understood and as he is so keen to join St John, we will respect his decision.

My son got into Infocomm…he is very happy as that’s his interest.

Since CCA at secondary school is different and carries points, it must be of his interest. I guess to be able to get into a CCA of his interest and minimal staying back is enjoying the best of both worlds. I am happy for him.
