I pray that who ever wins, whatever the results, it is for the betterment of Singapore. This is the WP spirit, and the Singaporean spirit, isn't it? šŸ˜‰

Yea yea. Whoever wins, let's keep within our sight dat SG is moving towards a better tomolo for everyone.

It's been an interesting 9 days of campaigning.
d 2 main opponents hv basically ignored d other 2 contestants.
Wat started out as local contest bwt a 'poor' son of Punggol vs a 'hardworking' daughter of Punggol shifted into a new direction midstream into d campaign - d BE became a 'referendum' on WP n PAP performances.

PE voters hv been unfairly offered a false dilemmma.
Dis is not about two extreme choices of either for cohesion or divisive politics - there can be many degrees of co-operation bwt these two extremes.
It can only be gud for SG if we hv more alternative voices than just one dominant party in parliament to offer various alternatives to be debated rationally n soundly, to keep each other in check for d betterment of SG.

At 80:6, one more MIW wld not make much of a difference. But one more alternative voice will speak louder n make a greater difference than one more MIW voice drowned in a background of similar views.
Will Pungollians chose hope for a better SG of tomorrow over fear of change?

      We live in hope.

Has the same stand with the highlighted.

Why you never say b4 ?
Just back from Waterloo street but visited the other temple
And no prayers for the elections . Prayed for world peace though šŸ˜‰

d Indian temple next to GuanYin temple?
Donce bluff pray for world peace!
u went to pray for KJ right?

dat fellow need all d prayers he can get after he hantam WP last nite when he previously said he was all for oppo solidarity. šŸ˜†[/quote]Please la, dun insult me - KJ winning - that would be a nightmare. Thankfully the probability is 0.000000000000000000000001. And probably even he knows that. The only thing he can do is make WP lose.

I believe MLK's talk - content of character not colour of skin

On an off topic note I do prayer for world peace (its a sanskrit prayer - Lokah samasta sukhino bhavantu . Meaning: May all beings everywhere be happy and free and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all. )

I agree. But an across-the-board subsidy is not the answer is it? Why should taxpayers money be used to subsidise all and sundry when it's better used on those who really need it?
And who are those who \"really need it\"?

The Ministers do not really need their high salaries but they're still asking for them. I wonder if Singaporeans have become so selfish that we have forgotten our social responsibility.

Weighing in on the earlier transport discussion...

Although minor fare increments are affordable for many of us, we can't assume that this means everybody is doing okay. šŸ•ŗ I know of people who walk for hours to their destinations to save costs. It would be good if the Government can give vouchers to poorer families when there is a fare hike. The transport companies should also be able to justify the fare hikes with facts and figures, and not increase fares for the sake of keeping up with general inflation.

I concur with 3B on this. Likewise for all assistance relating to healthcare, childcare, education, elderly, etc.

else, how many hundred billions also not enuff :imconstipated:

The other thing about nationalisation of public services.

Its not just a matter of taking the profits and distributing it, therefore assuming that fares suddenly become more affordable. The far more important question is to whether a transport system is better run by the g'ment or by private operators.
Don't you think that the current model is broken? We can see and feel the competition among the telcos. That privatisation has been successful.

Can you feel or see any competition between SMRT and Comfortdelgro for MRT and Bus Services? I think it happens only during the bidding process. šŸ˜“

With the main transport providers losing money or not earning sufficient return on their capital and the PTC under pressure to keep the lid on prices, there is very little profit incentive for transport operators to improve services.

I think to most people, what rankles is fare increases in the face of record profits by the company year after year.

We are paying more, for no discernible improvement in service (ok, overcrowded trains probably attributable to separate immigration policy oversights), so can't fault people for making the link that the increase in fares goes towards lining shareholder pockets! Totally regressive no? Taking money from the common man (most who take public transport are in the lower income percentiles) to benefit rich shareholders?

The way the management is being staffed now (ex-Army men) it might as well be run by civil servants. Take away the profit motive, take away dividends to shareholders, won't it be possible, in the name of national interest, to freeze fares?

                      Errrr....they've dropped their salaries 20%+.

Take your pick. I'd say bottom 20% by household income would be a good place to start. They already get GST rebates etc.

Why subsidise the MRT fare of the Credit Suisse regional managing director on the way to Robinson Road from his Draycott condo (example only).

I'm fully aware of my social responsibilities, I call for higher income taxes across the board, to fund social programmes.

But I demand rigour to the process, no wasteful subsidies to public transport, healthcare, education and housing, to be abused by those who do not require it but use their vote to demand it (there are plenty of such Singaporeans, believe me).

Give the money to those who are disadvantaged.
