        JannettLee:
In General, I think these are the major reasons why PAP failed to garner supports:

        On Hot topic: Property
        - Rich fed up with all these cooling off measures as these have affected their property investments. What on earth of cooling off properties got to do with the majority who are currently complaining about high HDB prices and they have to wait for so long for the new HDB? PAP just wanted to take a cut in their profits from private properties sale transaction.
        - Some middle group fed up with their cooling off measures too because cooling off measures are obstacles that make it difficult for them to upgrade to private property.
        - People who does not even own a HDB are the angry people as HDB prices has gone up very high and they reckoned that they have to work for the rest of their life to service their HDB loan and also they have to wait for so long to get their new HDB.

In short, MND/MAS (cooling off measures) is barking up the wrong tree la. Instead of tackling the problem of high HDB prices due to low supply of HDB resulted from poor planning of HDB supply, MND/MAS spent times to help Govn to generate more incomes from all these cooling off measures la (e.g.ABSD). With many phrases of cooling off measures in place, have they managed to cool off the HDB prices? They controlled HDB supply but come up something to cooling off 2nd properties but kept selling lands for private property development (contradicting with each other). :siao:

        Indeed, 说一套,做一套。
Plus inflation, 7m people, COE and AIM added to people's dissatisfaction....

N.A.T.O[/quote]Got action lah. For example Taxi (money earning car) removed from cats a & b (no money earning car) if not your Coe can be $120k! Pension taken out of retired minster salary if not more tax increase. 😂
But more actions is required to improve education system to create a level playing field so that our taxes goes to grooming our own student and not throw them into n level ITE poly and hope they do well while we finance and advance the education of scholars from elsewhere. Not everyone is a LLL. 😉

I totally agree that we are very fortunate and SG is indeed a lot better than many other countries. However, we are where we are because of the hardwork if the old PAP in the 70s and 80s, and of course our grandparents and parents. The PAP of today cannot take the credit for what we have today. In the stat board that I'm working now, I have the privilege to work with an ex super scale civil servant who was still mentoring us until he passed away at 81 years old. According to the stories that he shared, the emphasis was always about the people, think of ways to save tax payers money. Also, the senior civil servants were rises from the bottom so they can make sound decisions very fast. But the senior civil servants of today are scholars, dun dare to make decisions as they are not familiar. Also, there is always the cost recovery that we have to bear in mind so all the stat board and ministries have to find ways to increase income to meet the cost recovery KPI.
So yes, we should be grateful to PAP for making SG as successful as it is today, but dun misplace the gratitude. It's not the current office holders.
And the reason ppl are in favour of WP is exactly that, we can see that the new PAP is going downhill and is bringing SG with it. That's why we need and opp like WP to slap them and put them back on track. And I agree with LTK, WP dun have the resources to replace pap so this is our best way out now
An excellent and valuable feedback from someone within the know. Thank you for this enlightenment. The civil servant you spoke about reminds me of Dr. Toh Chin Chye, the caring type that is very in touch with folks in the street. It's this type of stateman we want most in the government. Apparently, he was sidelined by his party for siding with the people.

Actually hor, PAP also got ministers who have no experience to run the ministry/country before like LKY (founder!), GKS , CCS, NEH, etc.. They are decision maker NOT the one who soiled their hands like Civil Servants la.. They have groups of civil servants to guide them la and all the resources at his disposal...

If minister can't connect to the ground and help the ground, then better don't be minister as they don't have the caliber to be minister la. You need to know the ground well to suggest and then craft a better policies. But hor, they can be civil servant, let MP/Minister connect to the ground la.

And the 7m people will increase the demand for property so supply will still play catching up. So, property prices will still go north? I hope I am wrong.

I actually don't agree with your analysis.

The current lot put more thought into policies, they finesse.

Think back to things like graduate mum's priority school admission, sterilisation of lowly educated women, stop at 2.

                  Who's policies were those?

How about ministerial pay? Who was the strongest advocate for high pay, threw the gauntlet down to CST and LTK back in the early 90s? Hint, our founding PM.

You think extra-marital affairs of PAP office holders are new? There are strong rumours of at least one high ranking minister of the 80s and 90s engaged in EMA, covered up.

                  The leaders of the '80s......

People don't know history, they don't study politics.

Frustrates the hell out of me.

The current lot is better, they try to convince, they rationalise.

But people have rose tinted glasses. They forget the political strategies of PAP today are firmly embedded in the past.

The older generation had their time, they were wildly successful.

But they are wholly unsuited to leadership today.

This whole concept of the past being better than the present is just fallacy.

New couples having to wait 3 years minimum for their first flat...their BTO flat is just an empty shell. Young couples have to save for wedding and renovate their flat and buy furniture. Even if they go for the minimum decor, renovation and furniture adds up.

New flats are in non-mature estates. If these young couples stay there and then start a family, they will be busy fetching/sending bb to and fro parents' place which is usually not near. Reason is bcos newly wedded couples can hardly afford to pay premium prices for resale units near their parents.

I just wonder if my kids can afford to buy a flat in future...or they also face the scenario of having to buy flats in the outskirts. Property prices will not come down.

You are not wrong. If property prices are not allowed to go up, how to attract immigrants? 😉 Furthermore interest rate is so low and likely to remain low for a long time, how will property prices fall? Question is how can I buy one when I need to take a loan with so many restrictions and terms attached when those from elsewhere pay cash? 😂
