      dooelsie:
My relatives are in HK and as what everyone think, it is not alll true that the maids are paid US400. Some are paid lesser. Yes, we hv no tax since 2008, not all get off days weekly. It depends. There are many maids working for employers relatives houses for US400 and none complain cos they need the money. A lot work more than 12 hrs a day, there are some that dont meet expectation n are sometimes not paid or paid much later.

Sleeping conditions may not b all that comfortable at times too as houses are normally considered quite big when its 500 sq ft. So singapore is heaven to some who have worked in HK
I fully agree govt should removed the levy. The maids here are high & mighty because they know they have a speaker of maid for them here in SIN. Having a maid is not luxury but with no choice. We (women) need to work to reduce & share the high expenses from our DH. I was hopeful the levy will be removed during the recent baby bonus. I'm utterly disappointed. I thought our views are needed but not being heard.

I agree that removing the levy would reduce the burden on those of us employing maids but…the money for the baby bonus has to come from somewhere. We mustn’t forget that at the end of the day the government needs to balance its books and the PAP’s stance is that we should retain a surplus for rainy days. So if the levy is removed or reduced someone else will be taxed in another way.

Anyone wants to start a Petition to get Maid Levy abolished?

Will I get invitation from Govt to ‘drink coffee’ if I start the petition on Facebook?

            I am on!

But I must state first, I only support scrapping the levy but not maids weekly off day. 😄

Don't think so, but you may get invitation to visit Istana and have a dialogue with PM 😂

                Can I reject PM's invitation? 😓

                  Haha... it's an \"honor\" what...

But, seriously, I think the FB petition is really a good idea. The gov needs positive feedbacks.

I will start facebook petition in these few days time, but need some legal advice before I start.

I wonder why nobody starts this petition? Should I go for it? Anyone here will support the petition?

Yes, you should start a Petition and add Halimah in the facebook too. If the Govt ask you to drink kopi, I will follow you. We are talking about facts, not gossips. There is nothing to be afraid of. If the Govt refuses to compromise, we will write a letter to ST Forum to highlight this issue.

Anyone can start a petition , especially if they feel many hold their opinion.

But we need to really think why? Petitions should be for changes that affect a community - something that benefits it or is an injustice that needs to be addressed.

Maid levy is indeed a source of revenue for the govt. It is not only for maids but for all foreign workers. In a way it is supposed to deter us from reliance on Foreign workers. And also the costs of having foreign workers in our tiny island.

Some need a maid and the maid expenses are a real strain on their budget. If a family with 5 digit monthly income or more says that the levy is too expensive , then is it fair? I think a large number of maids are hired by this group . Some ,if not many, who protest this levy even here in this forum are in this group too.

I would benifit too if the levy is abolished or reduced.
But is this benefitting the society at large? Is this an injustice to a group of people?
                        IMHO - a resounding NO.
