        hongqiao:
        Dear heyhoe,

        Answer your question:
Does that mean with broadband, you can install IP camera in your living room and study room? How would we know if it reach the communication range?
        - Yes, if you have broadband, and you have router at your home, you can install camera in living room, kichen, study room, etc. Usually the camera can communicate within 10 meters, so if the distance between the router and camera is within 10 meters, it is ok.

Hongqiao, the IP camera that you mentioned is able to view realtime from iphone/android? Is it clear?
-Yes, realtime video streaming. Depends on different brand and price, some have auto IR-LED illumination for night vision, so even night without any lighting, the view is also clear.
The snap screen picture for the low end camera, picture quality is still ok

Does the camera looks like a spy cam? My maid is clever, if she knows I am installing such thing at home, she will be unhappy.

The Linksys Cisco camera (hyperlinked in my earlier post) that i used had both visual and audio, live streaming accessible on the internet.

No noticeable to electricity bill for this.

I’m against installing cameras without informing the maid. I wouldn’t want someone to video my daily activities without my knowledge, even while employed. A home is afterall a private place. It’s a different story if I work as at a retail shop with video camera as that is a public spot. My philosophy is to do unto others what you want others do to you.

When we had our camera, we explained to the new maid our concerns, that our kids were still very young, she (the FDW) was brand new to the country and still learning many new things. We needed the camera to ensure safety.

Perhaps if we can ask ourselves what we hope to achieve from the videoing and what we will likely use the video viewing for. Explain that clearly, it may suffice. We have all heard of horror maid stories. But i always believe that most of them just want to make a living, so we ought to begin by assuming positive intentions. In this way, we have a much better go at building rapport and trust which is necessary for the employer-FDW relationship to work.
I am aware that some people would have a different opinion on this.

Thanks for all the sharing, i am thinking of getting a CCTV camera for my house too.

Thinking of putting it in the living room and kids room to let the maid know we are watching over And if they know about it, i guess it minimize the risk of them committing in crimes and etc.

I have installed a CCTV in my Hse for a year. I use this to monitor not my maid but for security reasons. Hence it’s only on the ground level. I can view it from my IPhone at any time and anywhere even when I m overseas as long as I have Internet access.
