2013 Sec 1 Discussions

We are into week 4 since school began. Son said there was no honeymoon period…after hearing that 4 letter word almost every other day, he is immune to it…T-E-S-T. After last year’s PSLE journey, he seems more resilient to the tougher schedule now.

My DS is having a second camp since wed. This one they get to come home everyday for Sec 1s since they already camped over at the beginning of Jan. Happily playing.


School load is definitely way lesser than last year. Tests if there was any, are rather small ones like just 1 sheet of paper. This bit we are happy. It’s the meal breaks and timing that is disturbing.

If school stays this way, and end results for Olevels are ok. It would be great. PSLE in a brand school took out alot of DS’s childhood and hopefully we can put back more bonding time outside of schoolwork. My last 6 years of bonding with DS was mostly homework time. I don’t want to be remembered this way!

I suggest you do not set the wrong expectation for yourself and your child.

It is just the first month of Sec school life. It is still orientation and settling down period for all the Sec 1s. That's why your DS is having the 2nd camp in a month and the workload isn't very heavy because all the lessons and CCA have just started. Surely you can't expect the same for the next 4 years? Going forward, there won't be 2 camps in a month and there will be more homework and revision for exams, no less than what he had gone through in P6.

We all know that as the children grow older, the pace of learning gets faster, there is a jump in P5, Sec 1, Sec 3, and in JC1. It is fine, most kids can manage.

Hope your DS enjoys his Sec school life as it can be very enriching, if he doesn't start with the wrong expectation. As parents, we do what we can to support them and enjoy the process together.

There are tests every week...I like them bcos he has to revise after every lesson. He is doing ok for those tests so far and i am grateful bcos he puts in effort to study for them.
PSLE is over...so I hope to enjoy the slower pace but with him having longer hours in school now, bonding time seems quite tough.

He is in infocomm CCA....was informed this is just once a week. But hours are a bit long. Friday nights...the only weekday he sleeps at at 930pm. CCA till 6pm.

Yes, I think that’s a wise choice…better focus on academic curriculum !

My DS has not got the result of his CCA selection yet. But some of them have already been informed by the various CCAs whether they are successful or not.


I am very afraid that he may end up with a CCA he does not like and which needs to come back every Saturday. I wonder whether we can appeal if DS gets into a CCA he has no interest in, but still "force" to choose as he was required to put in 6 choices.
