Our productivity has not even reached the level of developed nation and there is still room for improvement. 5% GDP growth due to 5% population increase isn't going to give existing citizens a better quality of life. But a 1-2% GDP growth due to productivity increase will lead to better life even with 0% population growth.

I suppose we can go back to being a laid back fishing port. But I'm told by those who actually go out to sea that the fish around here are mostly gone already.

Nobody is stopping who from becoming rich. It is just that the gap has become too huge that a big segment is actually suffering below. we are not talking about good life here, it is about the suffering segment that is getting larger.
Others got rich do not mean that you can't get rich, nor you can't make a decent living.
Identify the source of your unhappiness, things would just get by. :boogie: -

The Govt. must be given credit for helping the less well off. There are many different schemes in place but forumers who grumble about the widening gap must open their eyes first and look around. There are many social organisations with paid and unpaid helpers who look out for the poor. Just take the time to listen to these social workers and you will have a better understanding of the situation.
The poor who want to be helped are being helped in terms of money for children’s schooling, clothes and food (IMHO most impt. way to help poor). There are volunteer tutors from CDAC, SINDA, Mendaki, who are teaching these children and you know tutors like these do it because they care, so such tutors can make a difference to the child’s life.
As for the parents, many are divorced so they struggle to make ends meet, with very little skills. They are given the chance to earn a skill or to do part-time jobs to start earning some money. They are given transport and food allowances. BUT this help cannot go on forever, and they must after a period of time be independent enough to earn their income (but the children will still be looked after full time)
The untold story is of the less well-off who strangely enough DO NOT WANT help, because either they are ashamed, stubborn or do not want to be beholden to the Govt. It is surprising how many will not ask or ACCEPT help and will walk away from a low rent rental flat or chance to be trained to do a simple job, because they feel that they are being controlled or for some other reason.
So let us not hide behind the self-righteous but hypocritical claim that the gap between rich and poor is widening. People who make such claims do not know and choose not to know the true story but prefer the fantasy that they believe in. -

The whole model seems to bank on the presumption that foreigners will always flock to Singapore as and when our govt wants them to..
What if, in 10-20 years' time, there are other far more attractive cities for them to emigrate to? Would they still want to come here?
And after getting all ready for that supposed \"worst case scenario\" of 6.9m, immigrant doesn't flock here--as they've anticipated, then how? What are we gonna do with the presumed \"Singaporean PMET\" core then?
If they can lack forsight few years ago, there's no reason why the same batch of policy-makers wouldn't lack forsight yet again, is there?
So much for \"preparing for the worst\".
And since the model relies heavily on population growth to achieve the desired economic growth, what will happen to our economy if the target number dose not materiralise (because those people we need are not coming here)?
