As far as advantage is concern, I think it is still good for us to know some Malay language since we are surrounded by Malaysia and Indonesia.
Hi,naggo-nitemare:
3rd Lang can be taken at A levels at h2 level as a contrasting humanities subject. Other than tt, I don't think it offers any additional advantage for local uni admissions and thus, 3rd Lang should only be taken out of pure interest.
According to the MOELC website, taking 3rd Lang up to A levels does put the student in an advantageous position for scholarships to unis in these foreign countries.
I have children in foreign uni and am familiar with local uni. As far as I know, there's no advantage in the 3rd language at all. In fact, it is better not to take if you want to offer it in the uni, because you can then start at the same beginner level as everyone else. If you have prior experience, you will have to take the uni course at a more advanced level often competing with native speakers. But if your child loves the language and cannot wait to learn it, then I'd say go for it.

language since we are surrounded by Malaysia and Indonesia.[/quote]I have to agree with this view. Malay is truly important and good for u. National identity also. -
Wishing all RI boys & parents a Happy Lunar 'Snake' New Year!!!

I do agree that Malay as a 3rd language in Singapore is really useful. However if knowing that kids will be placed at a more advance level in Uni together with native speakers (ie.Malay Students) who are more advance in their language then isβt taking 3rd language now is at a disadvantage. Really confused.

Depends on whether you child intends to offer Malay as an elective in the uni, then. Normally, anything more than 3-4 years at secondary level will put them in the more advanced level bucket.
Happy New Year. -
Since we are in the topic of third language, I would like to check a few questions with parents whose DS is/are taking third language at MOELC.
1) Did any of your DS get their mid year results for Yr 1 last year? Especially for those boys taking German and Japanese.
2) was there a scope of work given out since beginning of year (something similar to what RI gives out every year where we know which piece of work is graded and what percentage they are worth)?
Thanks! -
Hi, DS goes to Sentosa for total defence day. Does anyone know whether they are dismissed now? Now it is supposed they should come back home/
