Any idea where can find Deuteur Bag?

We discussed this bag in another forum and this is what I know:

- a shop at Funan IT Mail Lev 2 (The Travel Shop- but not full range)

-'Around Singapore, there are outdoor shops (eg Outdoor Connection at Westmall)
that may have a wider range of backpacks of various sizes. I recall Lot1 (upper
floor) also has a pretty good one. But try the one at Westmall - the shop
assistant may not be very helpful but they have a good range and their prices
are reasonable.' (as shared by another parent)

You can find them from OG and Takashimaya. OG is selling the new and old ones for $139 and $99 where Takashimaya selling at $189 and $170 before 30% plus 10% discount. There is this bag shop in Tiong Bahru Plaza selling them too.

My dd is going to P1 next year but she is just 113cm and weighs 17kg. She is small in size relative to her age. I believe her school bag is going to be as heavy as her. I am worried as to how she is going to lug her bag especially up and down the staircases. Her school hall and classroom is on the second floor. There is no lift in the school so trolley bag is not a solution.

Hi cjs, my DD is about the same size as your DD. She is taller now but still weighs the same.
When DD was in P1, I got her a Impact backpack.
It is a very good amd durable ergonomic bag.
Used to get a SPI lego bag for DS years back. He used it for 2 years.
However, the bag itself is heavy even without the books!
Thus, both my children used Impact bags now.
The bags are washable and has many compartments.

I will advise against trolley bags for safety reasons.

I believe in investing in a good school bag.
It might be a bit costly but its benefits certainly outweigh the price.

Why is it that trolley bag is not recommended? We thought by pulling the load around, is better than carrying on the back?

It can be dangerous and noisy.


Imagine if your child’s classroom is not on ground level and there is no lift, your child has to lug the heavy bag up. Bear in mind that a trolly bag does not have the basic padding of a backpack and I have seen how those students struggled with the trolley bag.

By pulling the trolley bags along the corridor where the classrooms are situated, it caused a lot of moise and it could be disruptive to the other students who are having lessons.

The safest bet is still a backpack. Especially a good one as it helps in the correct posture of the child whose bone is still developing.

Per school recommendation : weight of school bags (including books) for P1 kids should not be more than 2 kgs (ave P1 kid’s weight is 20 kgs). They did a weight test on one of the P1 kid’s bag - stunning 7kgs !

In my son’s school, the teachers will keep most of their books in school for the lower primary children, hence it is quite manageable for the children. But this year, my boy is in P4 and his bag is much heavier at about 5.3kg. And I have checked his bag - there isn’t anything that I can take away to reduce the weight. Luckily he is quite strong and fit - but I pity those children who are smaller built at about 25kg and below. How will they manage? Their class is on the 6th floor and they are not allowed to use the lift…

Excellent tips! I notice that SPI has improved vastly in its design. Deuter is a great choice. Nearly got that for ds then I reminded myself of dd's non-brand ergo bag costing less than $40, which saw her thru for 3 yrs and still going strong... Its all abt structure of bag- padding on straps and back, firm base and straps to hold books close to body. - SK
