Hello Nugget and mummies who are keen to know what happens during a psychological assessment for school placement, here is the information and some tips that I have gathered from ours:

The IQ assessment is divided into 3 segments - verbal, non verbal and processing skills/speed. Verbal is subdivided into general knowledge, eg. what is the color of grass (where the child is required to answer green); word knowledge, eg. what is a bicycle/train/dog (where the child is required to tell the group and then further describe the subject); critical thinking, eg. what falls from the sky and is wet.

Non-verbal relates to the child being able to perform tasks that do not need verbal communication. eg. puzzles. Processing skills relate to activities that require visual discrimination and visual motor skills (some writing is required), eg. copying, marking off identical items on worksheets etc.

The terminology above may not be the exactly the ones being used at the assessment itself, but roughly this gives a gist of what is required at the psy assessment.

The assessment took about 1 and half hours, and parents were invited into the assessment room to watch while the assessment was being conducted. But we didnt stay in the room cos my doter would be more distracted if we were around.

The above was based on our personal experience. I am not sure how much inter-psychologists variance there is.

        Some other tips to consider:

        1. There are both morning and afternoon appointments for the psy assessment. If your child tends to feel sleepy in the afternoons, ask for a morning appointment. Kids can perform better when they are fresh.
        2. Ask for the name of the psychologist before the assessment and prep your child about going to work with ‘teacher so and so’.
        3. Ask the psychologist for a break during the assessment if you think your child cannot tahan so long a session at one stretch.

        Hope this helps.

                Summer tan:
Oh I just called the ICCP centre which my son is supposed to go this Friday. So the principal said there is this two weeks trial. My son so active I am starting to wonder will he pass the trial. If the centre couldn't accept him, I'm really at a loss which Pre school he can go........

ICCP is suppose to help kids with special needs. I don't think they will throw you out. They will have ways to calm your boy down.

                  phtthp,

I think I have asked you previously, but I might have missed out your reply.

Can we know how old is your kid? Is he/she also diagnose already?

Regarding your qn, the IQ assessment shld be around $200-$300+ after subsidy. AS we are given a timeslot for the IQ test, we shouldn't wait that long during assessment.

We paid less than $200 as subsidized patient.

From the time we saw the doctor in KKH to request for a psy assessment, to the time of psy assessment itself, it took about 2 months. But that included rejecting the first appointment which was one month apart cos the appointment was in the afternoon and we wanted a morning time slot.

As the assessment itself was based on appointment, we did not have to wait when we turned up at the assessment proper.

Nugget, hope it helps you one way or another, even though I thought my description was quite brief.

Different kids will have their own strong areas and different areas of weakness, so I find it hard to write down everything at one go. My doter scored above average in verbal general knowledge, but she was placed below average for her word knowledge. Meaning, she was not able to describe the subject matter well enough and needed much prompting. She also scored relatively well for non-verbal, but she was placed below average in the third segment, where some writing is required. Psy explained to us that it was not a case where she didnt know and couldnt write, but rather a case of her knowing but not wanting to write.

Depending on your child's strengths and weaknesses, you may like to focus on specific areas during this period. Not doing quantum leap things like placing the child on any professional program at this point to create a false baseline, but rather finding opportunities during daily life to help your child in the specific areas. For example, where your child is verbal, talking to your child about different things (basic groups like animals, transport, food, fruits could be a good bet), which group they belong to, what color and size (where applicable), where do you see them, where they live (for animals), what is their function etc.

BTW, psy also asked my doter to write the alphabet, and numbers 1-10. And about 5 basic words where she was required to do her own spelling. There was also some basic reading required. Based on what I observed, the things that were tested were not overly advanced for their age at 5.5yo, but more of a case where the child was required to perform and bring out the things that the child knows.

Hope this helps in your preparation.

                        Thanks again ImMeeMee,

You have shared plenty. At least you let me know the sequence of what will be tested. Now I roughly have an idea. I am pretty nervous myself even though I tell myself not to.

Spelling, my son cannot spell, or maybe he can spell only 3 letter words but he can read all words required for his level… The grouping of living things and none living things he is also quite weak. Will practice with him.

Do you know your dd IQ score immediately? When are you seeing the KKH doctor again for final review?
