don't make kid a guinea pig...it's like dipping your fingers in every pie to see which is nice...and for language or any subject, you don't see results immediately...but of course if the tutor dumps work on the students and then goes out for coffee or play game on iphone, then you know have to take kid out.

once you see results, don't change...good tutors really are hard to find...some open own school after leaving reputable tuition centres.

I’ve been looking for tutor(english) for my P3 son.


Managed to find one,but timing cannot compromise. Other than that,they find my place is too far n remote. Anyone shares the same difficulties as me?

I know how u feel. I used to have a very good tutor. but her timing clashes after teaching my son for 1 year. after that she has to leave because my son timing is unable to match her. =( but at least for now, my kids are in good hands.

I think parents should trust themselves. There are some things they can do to ascertain the suitability of the tutor. Before a lesson, parents could check the tutor’s credentials or conduct an interview with him or her. They could also have a trial lesson.


After hiring the tutor, they could communicate with the tutor or their kids about the topics covered during the lesson. I once heard a story from a man about how he hired a tutor and found out that she had been giving biscuits and tea to his kids during lesson time but not teaching. This went on for 1.5 years before he checked with his kids about the lessons, and he was shocked. By then, the kids were already failing their exams.

If the tuition is conducted at the tutor’s place, I feel that parents should visit the house to see if the environment is conducive for learning.

Even for word-of-mouth recommendations from a trusted source, I feel that the above should still apply.

I agree , communication with the tutor is very important
And ensure that the tutor has a structured lesson plan .

It’s not easy to find a reliable tutor. There are so many ads and tuition centres…finding one who can deliver results is like finding a needle in haystack. Even for word of mouth, it’s also depending on individual kids.

Friend who recommends tutor bcos his child did very well under that tutor…but my child could not achieve the same stunning result, I cannot blame and say the tutor is not capable, but reason is bcos my child’s foundation is not strong to begin with.
