The Real Reason Why We Send Our Children to Tuition

Teachers need to prepare lesson plans before stepping into class...or else there is no system in place what is to be taught. A lesson plan is VERY important.Dilbert A1,
U r right. The teachers don't have much time to prepare for classes, esp those with young families, but lacking experience. Some also lack teaching pedagogy.
Once, my girl told me for EL homework, it was to write a draft of pic compo...so I told her to get it done...but she told me she didn't know how to...I asked her several times if teacher taught and her answer is NO.
Her Eng teacher is fresh out of NIE...she simply gave the class a sample of what a draft should be...and use that as an example...that's IT !!! So does that mean parents have to teach ourselves ?
So if she doesn't teach and parents like myself do not know how to teach, what does this spell ? BTW, there is CA1 next week for Eng and students will be tested on writing picture compo. -
My P4 student told me that he was asked to do only 1 picture compo in the last 2-3 months. I’m really curious about what the teacher teaches during their English lesson.

i am panicking when i think of daughter's english CA1 next wed.
how is she going to pass it when teacher only gave a draft to the class and tell them to use as a reference :slapshead:
this is the reason why we HAVE TO send our children to tuition. -
My P4 student takes English, Maths and Science tuition from me. To my surprise, he told me that there is no CA1 for Maths and English. For science, only 1 small test. Nevertheless, I’m still pushing him to study ahead, who knows if the school might spring a surprise. If no surprise, we treat it as revising for mid year exams.

CA1 CA2 are for P5 & P6. P3 & P4 will only have SA1 & SA2. -
It depends on schools…daughter in P3 has CA1, CA2, SA1 and SA2.
-
Yup. Depends on schools.

The costs of education has indeed passed on to parents.
I am experiencing a problem now...with English and Chinese school teachers.
English teacher did not teach the class how to write a draft for compo...asked my daughter several times and get same answer - NO.
She gave the class a draft and sample copy of the compo to model on - TWICE :slapshead:
For Chinese. The teacher told the class to pick out 重点 from pic compo and copy it. Twice, my daughter has done it...each time teacher wrote on the side as 找不到重点. Last night, daughter told me have to redo. I did explain to daughter what 重点 means but knowing my half-pail Chinese, it may not be clear. Since it is the 3rd time doing the SAME thing, shouldn't the teacher do a more detailed job by telling a 9 year old? If not, this will be 'ding dong' to and fro till end of Term 1. -
You should have a good talk with your daughter's teachers, not to find fault, but rather, to discover for yourself the challenges the teacher is facing. That piece of info is very crucial, somewhat like the missing part of a jigsaw puzzle.
A beginning teacher usually has no resources and has to develop from scratch. Many more experienced teachers often are not willing to share, simply because of a ranking system in school that encourages competition rather than cooperation. So, the quality of the notes may differ from teacher to teacher. Not all schools use standardized teaching materials across the board.
Even if a teacher is experienced, the teacher is very distracted. Admin work is just one part. There are department projects, CCA, competition, school plays, science projects, Action Research thesis/projects.
If you really want your child's teacher to improve dramatically on quality of teaching, talk to the principal and school leaders. Tell them to stop pressuring their teachers to do more in order to score points for promotion and performance bonus. Tell them to save the crap of 'all-rounded' education.
Everyone has the same 24 hours a day. If the teacher spends more time on CCA and other school projects, it simply means that the teacher will spend less time on marking, lesson preparation and remedial. In school, the phrase 'time management' simply means bring the work home to do.
Just for your info, turnover rate is high, despite outsiders envying teachers as having 'iron rice bowl'. If you want your school teachers to teach better so that you can spend less on tuition, then you need to apply pressure on the school leaders and get them to focus on teaching, and stop the wayang.
BTW, when Minister Heng said he wanted to focus more on moral education and less on results, it simply means teachers have to set aside more time to plan and draft more Civics Education lesson packages. There is no reduction in other workload.
As parents, you would ask yourself if the school system (including top primary and secondary) is so good, why do you need to spend so much on tuition still?
I hope I shed some light on what is happening on in the schools. Most teachers would really want to focus on teaching. But circumstances and higher powers decided otherwise. -

Agreed totally! U forgot to mention d tons of paper / admin work they r facing as compare to our times as well.. I really feel for them, especially d kids & parents r nOt as easy to teach n deal wif as compare to olden days. True, technology bring upon efficiency etc.. Bt come on teaching is abt passion aka \"software cant b overload\"You should have a good talk with your daughter's teachers, not to find fault, but rather, to discover for yourself the challenges the teacher is facing.
