What does it come to mind for your children's birthday? Is it Cake? Anything else?

Teach our children to perform good deed.

If the first thought is cake, is this teaching goodness?

From the reaction of the child will reveal the outcome of the education . We need to examine whether we are Sowing the Right Seed.

This is a great opportunity to teach our children by enabling him to Associate his birthday as the Day of Suffering for the Mother.

      http://i47.tinypic.com/20if79x.png\">

Need to remember the hardship that mother undergone during 9 months pregnancy and labour pain, we educate the child through cultivating the sense of Gratitude in him.

Below are extract during the seminar conducted by 蔡礼旭老师:

After reading di zi gui, a teacher was wiping the table in the classroom one day, he discovered all his students in the class also mimic his action. The teacher was overwhelmed by the power of setting a role model himself.

That week, they went to the park to conduct teaching, the teacher squat down to pick up a piece of paper, after collecting 2 to 3 papers, he noticed a number of students also followed suit.

He discovered the truth, by setting a good example ourselves, whether as parents, teachers or leaders, never underestimate our enormous power to influence others.

          Our Jolly Companion:
He attended the recite class at Blossom World.

But he did not start straight for 弟子规 class. They go by stage
they do not start straight away (immediately) to 弟子规, because need to prepare the kids aged 4 to 7 (ie. N2 to P1), to be able to concentrate and focus in class first.

if your child's primary school does not teach them 弟子规, it is good to send them early here (preferably K1 / K2), so that your child gets to learn values, from young.

In the past, schools ever taught pupils before - how to be a good citizen or moral civics, ie. \"hao gong min\". But now, Chinese teachers find that they don't have the time to teach civics. They barely have enough time to cover their Chinese lessons, so schools nowadays don't teach \"hao gong min\" anymore. Sad fact.

because \"hao gong min\" not taught in schools anymore, no more good citizen around. Thus, you witness a situation like this :-

          i)
Commuters ignore pregnant woman, who asked for their seats on MRT train :-

YOUNG PEOPLE SAY THANKS TO ELDERS ON GRATITUDE DAY

THEY got down on their knees, said emotional words of Thanks, and served their parents tea.

          The occasion?
Gratitude Day, organised by non-profit organisation Blossom World Society, for the young to honour their parents for raising them.

About 430 people, comprising members, their families and volunteers, gathered at the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations’ hall yesterday to celebrate the event.

The young members served their parents lunch, and served tea on their knees. There was barely a dry eye in the hall during the tea ceremony. Many were moved to tears by the emotional outpourings.

Undergraduate Ooi Ching Fei, 23, who was there with his parents and two younger siblings, said he could not stop crying as he served his parents tea.

“I was very touched. I’m glad for this occasion as I would not have done this at home. I said sorry for all the bad things I had ever done to them, and recalled everything that they had done for me,” he said.

Blossom World Society executive director Patrick Yeo said the idea for Gratitude Day came about in recognition of the need to promote family values. “We chose New Year’s Day to celebrate it to signify a new beginning, and also because it is a time for us to bond with our families,” he said. “Family values are eroding, and we need to bring them back.”

Mr Pua Rui Shuin, 19, was there with his uncle and aunt to honour his paternal and maternal grandmothers. His parents are in Sydney, where the family has lived for the last seven years. Mr Pua is back to serve national service,

“I’m a traditionalist at heart, and I think it’s very important and only correct to show gratitude to those who raised you , But it should not be a one-off thing. This event will help me to remember to be grateful to my parents and grandparents every day.”

The Blossom World Society was formed in 2008 by a group of professionals and aims to educate young people, preserve cultural values and promote community services. It has about 100 members.

Speech by Ms Sim Ann, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Communications and Information and Ministry of Education, at the <COLOR color="#BF0000"><span style="color: #BF0000;">Blossom World Society Family Reunion Day on Sunday, 24 February 2013, at 2.40pm at the Orchid Country Club.

            7. I will now continue my address in English. I am honoured to be able to celebrate Yuan Xiao with all the families gathered here today.

Underscoring the activities organised by the Blossom World Society today are the values of respect and care.

These are also values MOE wants to nurture in our students, as part of Character and Citizenship Education in schools. In order to succeed, schools partner parents and the community so that these values are reinforced at home and through community activities.

<COLOR color="#BF0040"><span style="color: #BF0040;"><SIZE size="150"><span style="font-size: 150;">As parents, we are our children’s first teachers. I encourage parents to forge a strong partnership with our children’s schools so that our children will receive a holistic learning experience.

8.<COLOR color="#BF0000"><span style="color: #BF0000;"> With the support of the community and organisations, like Blossom World Society, our students can take part in meaningful activities, bond with family and friends, learn life-skills, and pick up the values we cherish as a society. I look forward to seeing more of such activities.

            9. I wish all of you happiness, good health and prosperity for the New Year. Thank you.

Just to show: there is a cartoon programme on this every Sunday morning at 10.00-1030 am on channel 8. Just happened to chance upon on today and I though it would be a good introductory when discussing values with our little ones

Di Zi Gui (弟子规), (Standards for being a Good Pupil and Child) was written during the reign (1661-1722) of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi by Li Yu XIu.

The book is based on the Ancient Teaching of the Chinese philosopher Confucius that emphasises the basic requisites for being a good person and guidelines for living in harmony with others. Like the San Zi Jing(三字经), it is written in three-character verses.

                    Confucius emphasised that the Basic MORAL VALUES and VIRTUES should be FIRST taught to a child since young;

                    those values are to
                    (1) respect elders,
                    (2) respect brothers and sisters,
                    (3) respect wife and husband,
                    (4) respect the society and lastly
                    (5) respect the country as a whole.

He believed without those values all other learning would amount to nothing.

First it teaches you How to be Dutiful to your Parents, and to be Respectful and loving to your siblings.
                    http://i46.tinypic.com/2wcjskm.png\">

Then it teaches you how to be Cautious & how to be a Trustworthy person.

Furthermore, it teaches you to Love ALL Equally.

Be Close and Learn from people of Virtue and Compassion

After you have accomplished all the above values, you can learn other skills to improve the quality of cultural life.

The teachings in Di Zi Gui has been the standard teaching for the young of China for thousands of years.

                    Dawnie:
Is it important to know 弟子规? Do they teach 弟子规 in primary schools?

My boy will be in K2 next year, his school doesn't teach him 弟子规 since he is in a Church Kindy. Whereas his cousinsin K1 and P2 were taught 弟子规 in school.

Have a friend whose p3 son not motivated in study. Come back home from school always watch tv, play.

Is there any verse inside Di Zi GUI that remind kids to be motivated to study, or at least be teachable, willing to learn ? Or explain why they need to study
