X Ray
-
Last sunday, we got into car accident. my 5 year old boy was sitting in front. car was slow moving, but when I braked suddenly, his head hit the dashboard…nosebleed a lot…I was worried that it might cause head injury, so sent him to A & E. doc said should be ok, but also mentioned taking x ray…I readily agreed to take, just to make sure he is ok. he was quite alert and seems ok…and was playing…I still think I shouldn’t make him go for the x ray…but I was scared during then…
I searched the web and found that x ray may be damaging to the brain…just want to know how true is that? anyone has any idea or anything to share? -
X-rays are a relatively safe method of investigation and the radiation exposure is low. Except in pregnant patients, the benefits of the investigation (X-ray) should be balanced with the potential hazards to the unborn fetus.

hi smurf,
Sorry to hear about the accident. X-rays may not be good, but I think if taken once in a long time, should pose no/very little harm. The benefits of being able to ‘see’ if your child internal organs are damaged would (IMHO) outweigh the dangers of x-ray.
DS2 was once warded for bronchitis when he was less than 1 y/o, and pd suggested x-rays, ultrasound - check on the heart and lungs. 2 years on, seems quite ok to me. -
I will think the doctor is aware of the risks involved,
As a mother, I will definitely let my child go for the necessary tests and x-rays for assurance of the mind. -
but but but, the doctor said he should be ok after checking (physical). and then when I asked him again, no need to x ray? he said, ok lor. then take x ray. I’m not a doc so I rely on the doc to tell me whether is it absolutely necessary to take, and not the other way round.
i dunno, but come to think of it now, i dun think it is necessary to take. :x -
My 19 mth old fell from the coffee table headfirst and had nose bleed that kept recurring. Two days later he fell again when walking around (my maid mopped the floor) and the nose bleeds came back.
Worried, I brought him to A&E at KK Hospital and the doctor gave him a physical examination and certified he was alright. Like you, I also asked the question should we let him do an x-ray (check for fracture), head scan (check for internal bleeding), etc to ensure there’s no serious damage done? Doc said no need for that as my baby was behaving alright (no vomiting/lethargy/drowsiness, playing normally, etc) and the physical examination showed no damage. Now, 2 months on, he’s perfectly fine.
I believe there’s no real harm done going through the x-ray. But you may just want to make a mental note that he’s had one done and to be extra careful with this child to protect him from potential head injury so as
1. not to aggravate previous injury
2. prevent the possibility to requiring to do another x-ray within short span
Just my 2cts worth… -
Thanks cmm for sharing.
I'm just angry why some doctors can treat x ray as a normal procedure.

Agree. Hope your boy is feeling better.

thanks.:)
he is ok now... :xedfingers: -

smurf, even though he is ok now, I do hope you will take greater precautions and secure your kid in a proper child seat in future. Those additional seconds of buckling him up is nothing compared to the hours and worrying you have to endure in the hospital.thanks.:)
he is ok now... :xedfingers:
