My 19 mth old fell from the coffee table headfirst and had nose bleed that kept recurring. Two days later he fell again when walking around (my maid mopped the floor) and the nose bleeds came back.


Worried, I brought him to A&E at KK Hospital and the doctor gave him a physical examination and certified he was alright. Like you, I also asked the question should we let him do an x-ray (check for fracture), head scan (check for internal bleeding), etc to ensure there’s no serious damage done? Doc said no need for that as my baby was behaving alright (no vomiting/lethargy/drowsiness, playing normally, etc) and the physical examination showed no damage. Now, 2 months on, he’s perfectly fine.

I believe there’s no real harm done going through the x-ray. But you may just want to make a mental note that he’s had one done and to be extra careful with this child to protect him from potential head injury so as
1. not to aggravate previous injury
2. prevent the possibility to requiring to do another x-ray within short span

smurf, even though he is ok now, I do hope you will take greater precautions and secure your kid in a proper child seat in future. Those additional seconds of buckling him up is nothing compared to the hours and worrying you have to endure in the hospital.

It's great that your boy is much better. I just want to add that it's really, really, really not recommended for young children to be seated in the front passenger seat, even with a carseat, because of the airbag!
So maybe you'd want to get him used to sitting behind...

I can understand how bad you feel about it, but don't worry too much about the x-ray. My DS2 had one taken at a tender 3 weeks old, in addition to a spinal tap (imagine seeing a long sharp needle going into a newborn's spine!). I freaked out big time about the procedures, especially when all the tests came back negative. My DH (in the medical field) and all the paeds, neurologists assured me repeatedly at that time that the x-ray will not damage him.

Er, x-rays, MRIs, etc are very normal imaging procedures for doctors for diagnostic purposes. Besides, there's professional liabilities to consider mah.

agreed with u that it's not recommended for a child to sit in front. but but but, I've been struggling with him regarding this. he insisted that he wants to be in front...if I insisted otherwise, he throws tantrum...guess u read in other thread that he is a tantrum 'thrower'...

but after this incident, I think he also learnt a precious lesson, now he kuai kuai put on seat belt and said next time he wants to sit behind... :oops:

Don't worry about skull xray.
The radiation dosage is very minimal.

see page 10 and page 28.

In summary, from what I have understood from the article, the radiation dosage from a skull xray is 0.07mSv.
If one is exposed to 0.3mSv per year, the risk of dying is 0.00001.
Compared to other activites, eg flying, the risk of dying is 0.003.

So don't worry!
