My ds has this bad habit of nail peeling. It's been years since I cut his nails.

      Any solution for this?

He usually does it when he's nervous or bored.

I do it myself. I'll like to see you try and stop me... 😂

      So Chiefy, out with it!

Anxiety Disorder or just plain bored?

don't shatter my hopes leh. i managed to trim some of the ragged layers off ds's nails when he was sleeping last night. If it is very bad (ie tear into edge of nailbed) he will ask for plasters and that gives the nail some time to recover.
Lol... it's just a habit that I never grew out of. I only do it in private... and never to the point of bleeding. I never use a nail cutter, I don't bite my nails, and I keep my nails clean and short all the time.

It's just the satisfaction of getting rid of some unwanted stuff (overgrown nails), and feeling clean afterwards. It's like when you feel the smoothness of a piece of cloth, and finding some bumps or blemishes, and you just HAVE to pull it out, get rid of the imperfection, and you feel satisfied from having been the one that made it more perfect. I still remember my blankie when I was a toddler... a real stinker as I refused to get it washed, and it was full of holes from all the peeling I made in it. My mom had to secretly throw it away and then deal with my bawling over many sleepless nights afterwards 🙂 . Now my wife has to deal with my bad habit... I would scour her body for scabs, and I just HAVE to rub it out... and she absolutely hates it! 😂

buds ah... in my case, I don't think it is self-mutilation or stress... more like I can't stand imperfection  . It's a terrible characteristic to live with for my entire life... haiz.

ChiefKiasu, thanks for sharing your perspectives. That just gave me an idea, how about ‘filing’ nails instead or peeling? It makes the nails smoother and even. Maybe I should try that on DS.

Filing is a good idea... although it is not permanent and nails will grow, and you probably won't be always able to keep them filed all the time.

I'm not even sure if this is a habit that needs fixing, unless they result form self-mutilation instincts or are causing medication or social issues.

Another thing - does your son peel off dried scabs of wounds that are not fully healed? For me, having scabs on me is plain torture... I can't wait for them to \"ripen\" and they itch so much! Ugh.

Aiyoh!! I can feel your mum's (and wife's!!) vexation!! Picking the scabs will leave scars! :spank: :spank:

They itch because the scabs cannot stretch like normal skin. Same with any scars on a still growing body. Scarred skin cannot stretch as much and the difference in elasticity cause the itching. Keep a tube of moisturiser handy and just rub some in every time it itches.

Thank goodness you are not my mommies 🙂

And you are probably thanking divine providence for not having me as your sonny.

And for the record... I don't bite my nails hor.

DH used to bite his nail when he is anxious also. Thank goodness he kicked his bad habit already. He keeps his nails real short now.

You sure? At his age, he probably still bites them when he knows you are not looking :imanangel:

He keeps a nail clipper in his bag (uncle behavior). So far I have not caught him bitting his nails yet but if I do I will cane his disobedient fingers :spank:
