Nail Biting Bad Habit

ChiefKiasu, thanks for sharing your perspectives. That just gave me an idea, how about 'filing' nails instead or peeling? It makes the nails smoother and even. Maybe I should try that on DS.
Filing is a good idea... although it is not permanent and nails will grow, and you probably won't be always able to keep them filed all the time.
I'm not even sure if this is a habit that needs fixing, unless they result form self-mutilation instincts or are causing medication or social issues.
Another thing - does your son peel off dried scabs of wounds that are not fully healed? For me, having scabs on me is plain torture... I can't wait for them to \"ripen\" and they itch so much! Ugh. -
ChiefKiasu:
Aiyoh!! I can feel your mum's (and wife's!!) vexation!! Picking the scabs will leave scars! :spank: :spank:

They itch because the scabs cannot stretch like normal skin. Same with any scars on a still growing body. Scarred skin cannot stretch as much and the difference in elasticity cause the itching. Keep a tube of moisturiser handy and just rub some in every time it itches. -
You all .... :siam: :yikes: ... I feel the pain just reading about peeling and biting your nails. And scratching off scabs too .... Yikesss!

Thank goodness you are not my mommies

And you are probably thanking divine providence for not having me as your sonny.
And for the record... I don't bite my nails hor. -
DH used to bite his nail when he is anxious also. Thank goodness he kicked his bad habit already. He keeps his nails real short now.

You sure? At his age, he probably still bites them when he knows you are not looking :imanangel: -
ChiefKiasu:
He keeps a nail clipper in his bag (uncle behavior). So far I have not caught him bitting his nails yet but if I do I will cane his disobedient fingers :spank:TheAnswer:

Tell them that the nails are another form of hair. If they bite and chew or even, eat them up, they are liken to chewing and eating their own hair. My son had this bad habit until his science teacher enlightened him. He has been conscious since and stops himself before he does anything silly. LOL!

Now that's cunning
But how about this thing about \"Eating boogers is good for your health\"? :yikes: :siao: :faint:
\"A doctor in Australia has come up with sufficient research that states that what we don't know is that after we eat it, the boogers actually acts like a low grade flu shot. We eat the bacteria, the immune system fights off the bacteria, causing our immune system to strengthen. It acts just like a medicine would.\"

Back to the nail biting & peeling, anyone tried home manicure? Apply a few coats of transparent nail polish? Do it during the weekends for little Boys & Girls. If you apply other stuff, they may rub their eyes.
